Megjegyzések:
The transport sector is undergoing a major transformation, as battery electric vehicles (BEV) are gaining ground. Therefore, assessing the sustainability aspects of their use is crucial to obtaining a clear picture of the sector. This article aims to meet this requirement by using European Union (EU) data for the period 2011 to 2021 and focuses not only on EU-27 aggregates but also on each member state separately. For the evaluation, a well-to-wheel (WTW) method was used to calculate two parameters: energy-specific CO2 emissions (?) and total efficiency of energy conversions, transmission, and battery (?total). For these values, the annual electricity mixes of the countries were tracked in 5+1 categories (combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT), thermal power plant, biofuels, nuclear power plant (NPP), renewables, and imports). The calculated results were illustrated by sustainability matrices describing the former and current positions of the countries. The EU-27 aggregate achieved a 0.04 increase (from 0.37 to 0.41) in total efficiency and a 29 gCO2/MJmotion decrease (from 113 to 84 gCO2/MJmotion) during the period. This ? value for 2021 was around half the world average. However, very significant differences were identified between member states, which are also assessed in the article with special emphases on the five most populated EU countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland).

Improvement of N and P ratio for enhanced biomass productivity and sustainable cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae / Tamás Magyar, Bence Németh, János Tamás, Tamás Nagy Péter

Megjegyzések:
Microalgae cultivation could contribute to the achievement of several sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, cultivating Chlorella vulgaris, like any other microalgae, is challenging due to various biotic, abiotic and process related factors that can affect its growth and biomass productivity. Nutrient availability, particularly N and P, and their ratio play a crucial role in building cellular structures and maintaining metabolic processes, determining basically the maximum achievable biomass productivity under given circumstances. The present article aims to improve the N and P ratio to enhance the biomass productivity of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae as well as to characterize the biomass growth kinetics that can be used for prediction purposes. The results showed that the nutrient solutions prepared with increased nitrate concentration (T1 - N:P = 55:1 and T3 - N:P = 28:1) promoted chlorophyll formation and significantly outperformed the control sample (BG-11 - N:P = 35:1) with 192% and 183%, leading to higher biomass productivity with 1160 mu g L-1 and 1103 mu g L-1, respectively. Moreover, a strong positive correlation was revealed (0.81) between phosphate concentration and microalgae activity rate, indicating the role of phosphorous in energy transfer, resulted in stimulated microalgae activity rates with 71.2% and 70.66% in the phosphate-increased nutrient solutions (T2 - N:P = 14:1 and T3 - N:P = 28:1). In addition, an exponential equation was introduced to characterize the biomass growth kinetics, of which the theoretically achievable maximum chlorophyll concentration (C-TAM) and the theoretical cultivation time (t(cultivation)) were determined for the tested nutrient solutions with variable N:P ratio. It was concluded, that the higher the N:P ratio, the higher the C-TAM is, nevertheless the absolute concentration of these nutrients need to be considered as well. The introduced two key parameters could provide valuable information for decision makers regarding the optimization of growth conditions, nutrient supplementation, and harvesting, additionally decreasing the production costs and making the cultivation cycles more effective and sustainable.

Influence of human capital, urbanization, fuel imports and other macroeconomic factors on electric vehicle adoption / T. Kiss Judit, W. Árpád István, Kocsis Dénes

Megjegyzések:
Given that the transport sector is one of the largest emitters of CO₂, promoting the growth of electric vehicles is an option in the fight against climate change, and individual policies need to develop appropriate measures. The study examined the factors influencing the spread of electric passenger cars using panel data from 2012 to 2021 in 18 European countries. Electricity prices, urbanization, fuel imports, real GDP per capita, human capital and household saving rate were included in the multivariable non-linear model. To the best of our knowledge, there is no previous study on the impact of household savings and the inclusion of these variables in one model for the sample of selected countries and periods. Based on the results, human capital, household savings, and urbanization have a significant positive effect on the spread of electric cars, while fuel import has a significant negative effect. The biggest impact was found on urbanization and human capital. Reducing dependence on fuel imports can positively affect the uptake of electric vehicles. At the same time, providing information on the environmental impact of electric vehicles and policies that support investment in human capital can also have a favourable indirect effect on the uptake of electric vehicles.
