Megjegyzések:Arginine is a crucial amino acid that regulates growth, metabolism, and cellular homeostasis through nutrient-sensing pathways such as the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR). However, the mechanisms by which dietary arginine modulates mTOR signalling and associated gene networks during early development remain poorly understood in birds. Here, we tested the effects of dietary arginine levels (low, control, and high) on body mass, gene expression, and gene network connectivity in Japanese quail chicks (Coturnix japonica). Using 153 birds over a 14-day experiment, we show that post-hatch arginine restriction significantly impairs growth in both sexes, while gene expression and gene network connectivity responses to arginine availability are strongly sex-specific. Arginine supplementation in females led to coordinated upregulation of growth-related genes (IGF1, GHR), translation regulators (EIF4EBP1), lipid metabolism genes (FASN, FABP1), and oxidative defence (SOD2). In contrast, males showed more limited changes, primarily involving MTOR and autophagy-related gene ATG5. Gene network analysis revealed enhanced connectivity and centrality in females under arginine supplementation, suggesting a more extensive gene interaction response, while males showed sparser networks under restriction, with MTOR and IGF1 emerging as key regulatory hubs. These findings provide novel insights into the sensitivity of developing birds to early nutritional conditions and suggest that the mechanisms underlying growth, gene expression, and gene networking can differ between the sexes, even without sex differences in phenotypic traits. Our results highlight the importance of considering sex-specific gene regulatory architectures when evaluating nutritional effects on vertebrate development.

Megjegyzések:The fission yeast clade, which has a distinct life history from other yeasts, can provide important clues about evolutionary changes. To reveal these changes the large S. cryophilus supercontigs were assembled into chromosomes using synteny relationships and the conserved pericentromeric, subtelomeric genes. Togetherness of the supercontigs was confirmed by PCR. Investigation of the gene order revealed localisation of the rDNA arrays, more than 300 new conserved orthologues and proved that S. cryophilus supercontigs were mosaics of collinear blocks. PFGE analysis showed that size of the S. cryophilus chromosomes differ from the S. pombe chromosomes. Comparative genomic analyses of the newly assembled chromosomes confirmed that the closest relative of S. cryophilus was S. octosporus not just in sequence similarity but also in a structural way, and revealed that preservation of the conserved regions did not arise from the lower number of chromosomal rearrangements. Translocations were more typical in the closely related species, while the number of inversions increased with the phylogenetic distances. Our data suggested that sites of the chromosomal rearrangements were not random and often associated with repetitive sequences, structural- and nucleotide evolution might correlate. Chromosomal rearrangements of the fission yeasts compared to other lineages were also discussed.

Megjegyzések:The assessment of heavy metal pollution in leaves and soils is essential in environmental health monitoring. We assessed the effect of anthropogenic activities along an industrial-urban-rural gradient in the roadside soil and tree leaves of Bangladesh based on their metal concentration. The concentrations of Pb, Cr, Ni, and Cd were analysed in leaves of Ficus benghalensis, Swietenia macrophylla, and Polyalthia longifolia and topsoil samples using ICP-OES. We used pollution indices to quantify the impact of contaminants on ecosystems. Our findings indicated that there were higher metal concentrations, especially Cd and Pb, in soil and leaves in close proximity to locations with substantial traffic and industrial activities. Igeo index indicated moderately to strongly polluted areas by Cd. The contamination factor (CF) for Cd indicated a severe contamination, while moderately contamination show by Cr, Pb, and Ni. The value of the ecological risk factor was below 40 for Cr, Ni, and Pb; thus, negligible ecological risks were considered for these elements. But, the ecological risk assessment indices showed that Cd poses high ecological risks in soil and leaves across all study areas. Bioaccumulation analysis indicated substantial heavy metal absorption in tree foliage, with F. benghalensis and P. longifolia exhibiting elevated Pb accumulation in urban environments. The PCA indicated that Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb mostly derived from anthropogenic sources in leaves and soil samples, too. Our results demonstrated that F. benghalensis, S. macrophylla, and P. longifolia are good indicator to assess the effect of anthropogenic activities on the terrestrial ecosystem. Our results also indicated the critical need for environmental monitoring and mitigation techniques in urban and industrial zones to reduce heavy metal pollution in roadside ecosystems.

Cím:Empirical delineation of the forest-steppe zone is supported by macroclimate / Ákos Bede-Fazekas, Péter Török, László Erdős
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2045-2322
Megjegyzések:Eurasian forest-steppes form a 9000-km-long transitional zone between temperate forests and steppes, featuring a complex mosaic of herbaceous and woody habitats. Due to its heterogeneity regarding climate, topography and vegetation, the forest-steppe zone has been divided into several regions. However, a continental-scale empirical delineation of the zone and its regions was missing until recently. Finally, a map has been proposed by Erdos et al. based on floristic composition, physiognomy, relief, and climate. By conducting predictive distribution modeling and hierarchical clustering, here we compared this expert delineation with the solely macroclimate-based predictions and clusters. By assessing the discrepancies, we located the areas where refinement of the delineation or the inclusion of non-macroclimatic predictors should be considered. Also, we identified the most important variables for predicting the existence of the Eurasian forest-steppe zone and its regions. The predicted probability of forest-steppe occurrence showed a very high agreement with the expert delineation. The previous delineation of the West Siberia region was confirmed by our results, while that of the Inner Asia region was the one least confirmed by the macroclimate-based model predictions. The appropriate delineation of the Southeast Europe region from the East Europe region should be refined by further research, and splitting the Far East region into a southern and northern subregion should also be considered. The main macroclimatic predictors of the potential distribution of the zone and its regions were potential evapotranspiration (zone and regions), annual mean temperature (regions), precipitation of driest quarter (regions) and precipitation of warmest quarter (zone), but the importance of climatic variables for prediction showed great variability among the fitted predictive distribution models.

Megjegyzések:Environmental filtering and limiting similarity are those locally acting processes that influence community structure. These mechanisms acting on the traits of species result in trait convergence or divergence within the communities. The role of these processes might change along environmental gradients, and it has been conceptualised in the stress-dominance hypothesis, which predicts that the relative importance of environmental filtering increases and competition decreases with increasing environmental stress. Analysing trait convergence and divergence in lake phytoplankton assemblages, we studied how the concepts of 'limiting similarity' versus 'environmental filtering' can be applied to these microscopic aquatic communities, and how they support or contradict the stress-dominance hypothesis. Using a null model approach, we investigated the divergence and convergence of phytoplankton traits along environmental gradients represented by canonical axes of an RDA. We used Rao's quadratic entropy as a measure of functional diversity and calculated effect size (ES) values for each sample. Negative ES values refer to trait convergence, i.e., to the higher probability of the environmental filtering in community assembly, while positive values indicate trait divergence, stressing the importance of limiting similarity (niche partitioning), that is, the competition between the phytoplankters. Our results revealed that limiting similarity and environmental filtering may operate simultaneously in phytoplankton communities, but these assembly mechanisms influenced the distribution of phytoplankton traits differently, and the effects show considerable changes along with the studied scales. Studying the changes of ES values along with the various scales, our results partly supported the stress-dominance hypothesis, which predicts that the relative importance of environmental filtering increases and competition decreases with increasing environmental stress.

Megjegyzések:Hydras are freshwater cnidarians widely used as a biological model to study diferent questions such as senescence or phenotypic plasticity but also tumoral development. The spontaneous tumors found in these organisms have been so far described in two female lab strains domesticated years ago (Hydra oligactis and Pelmatohydra robusta) and the extent to which these tumors can be representative of tumors within the diversity of wild hydras is completely unknown. In this study, we examined individuals isolated from recently sampled wild strains of diferent sex and geographical origin, which have developed outgrowths looking like tumors. These tumefactions have common features with the tumors previously described in lab strains: are composed of an accumulation of abnormal cells, resulting in a similar enlargement of the tissue layers. However, we also found diversity within these new types of tumors. Indeed, not only females, but also males seem prone to form these tumors. Finally, the microbiota associated to these tumors is diferent from the one involved in the previous lineages exhibiting tumors. We found that tumorous individuals hosted yet undescribed Chlamydiales vacuoles. This study brings new insights into the understanding of tumor susceptibility and diversity in brown hydras from diferent origins.

Dátum:2021
ISSN:2045-2322
Megjegyzések:Parasitism-generated negative effects on ant societies are multifaceted, implying individual and colony-level responses. Though laboratory based evidence shows that the sublethal fungus Rickia wasmannii is responsible for physiological and behavioral responses that may negatively affect individual workers' resilience and life expectancy in Myrmica ant workers, colony-level stress response to this parasite is largely unknown. Here, we focus on understanding of a long-term, colony-level effect of Rickia infection on Myrmica scabrinodis ant populations by tracking trait size-based changes. We collected worker specimens from infected and uninfected colonies from the same population in order to: (1) compare body size in response to parasitism, (2) assess the extent to which possible changes in size are associated with the severity of infection, and (3) investigate shifts in body size in response to infection over time by testing correlation of workers' ages and sizes. We found that workers from infected colonies were significantly smaller than their healthy congeners, but neither infection level nor the age of the workers showed significant correlation with the size in infected colonies. Decreasing body sizes in infected colonies can be ascribed to workers' mediated effect toward developing larvae, which are unable to attain the average body size before they pupate.

Megjegyzések:Although ground-baiting related nutrient loading has been widely studied, we do not know what proportion of these nutrients release into the water column, affecting primary production directly. We conducted short-term (24-h, 5-day) experiments at wide temperature range, in presence and absence of fish using fish meal-based (FM-GB) and plant-based groundbait (PB-GB), to assess the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fluxes from GB into the water column. Nitrogen release from unconsumed FM-GB was negligible in the first 3 days, then increased abruptly, releasing 32% of its total N content by the fifth day. In contrast, PB-GB acted as temporary sink for inorganic N forms. Considerable (18?21%) inorganic P release was observed in both GB types in the first twelve hours. Consumed GBs induced considerable inorganic N release and its rate increased with temperature. Particulate forms predominated the released N in PB-GB, suggesting impaired digestion. Phosphorus?dominated by particulate forms?release was similar or lower than in unconsumed GB. Based on our results, excessive use of GB?when high amount of it remains unconsumed?can enhance eutrophication in P-limited ecosystems. Although less digestible GBs may have less abrupt effect on the primary production, undigested nutrients remain unavailable for removal through fish harvest.

ISSN:2045-2322
Megjegyzések:Road management practices, such as winter de-icing create ideal habitats and competitive advantage for salt-tolerant species. We aimed to map the occurrences of halophytes along roads in Hungary. Furthermore, we tested factors that might play a role in the roadside occurrences of five chosen native halophytes from rare to common, we encountered during our field surveys. These were Festuca pseudovina, Limonium gmelinii subsp. hungaricum, Podospermum canum, Puccinellia distans and Spergularia media. We found, that at least one halophyte species was documented in 71% of the total sampling points. Germination experiments indicated that substrate salt concentration significantly decreased germination rates in each of the five species, but in case of L. gmelinii subsp. hungaricum, or P. distans germination occurred on extremely high salt concentrations. Traffic intensity, the presence of other halophytes at the sampling point and the presence of a given species in the surrounding landscape had a significant positive effect on the occurrence of four of the five model species. Our results suggest that the studied species are mostly in the early stage of their roadside spread, colonizing roadsides close to their native distribution ranges. The possibility of a future range expansion along roads cannot be excluded.
