Megjegyzések:Polyunsaturated fatty acid consumption has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. We studied if administration of broth with beef meat enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids influenced glucose-stimulated insulin release in healthy male volunteers. Broth was made either from cattles undergone dietary supplementation with lightly bruised whole linseed in addition to feeding ad libitum on grass silage (test meal) or from those fed grass silage alone (control meal). Oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were performed in patients after a 6-day period of eating 300 ml broth containing 100 g meat once a day in addition to their otherwise normal mixed nourishment. During OGTT, blood samples were taken for blood glucose level and plasma insulin immunoreactivity before and 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 180 min after the glucose load. Glucose-stimulated maximum increase in plasma insulin immunoreactivity was 42 ? 6.6 and 81 ? 7.4 mU/ml (p < 0.05) after the test and the control meals, respectively. However, both fasting and postload blood glucose levels were the same after either meal period. The results suggest an insulin-sensitizing effect of food produced from beef cattle maintained on linseed diet in healthy human volunteers.

Megjegyzések:Nurse sows are used for nursing surplus piglets in hyper prolific pig herds, thereby extending their lactation. We examined weaning outcomes and effects of extended lactation length (ELL) of nurse sows on subsequent (sub) prolificacy (live-born LB, still-born SB, and mummies Ms). A total of 18,107 nurse sows were analyzed. The data encompassed nurse sows of parities (P1-P6) and three ELL categories: 0-7 d, 8-14 d, and 15-21 d. General linear mixed-effects models were applied to the data. Nurse sows weaned 12.43 piglets during the 1st wean event (W1) and 10.82 piglets during the 2nd wean event (W2). Parity effects were detected (p<0.05) in both W1 and W2 piglets but not group effects. The highest (p<0.05) number of W1 piglets was recorded for P2 sows and the lowest for P6 sows. Parities 1-4 nurse sows weaned a higher (p<0.05) number of piglets during W2 than parities 5 and 6. Subsequent LB for nurse sow parity differed significantly (p<0.05), with the highest being recorded for parities 2-5. Parities 3-6 showed a significant number of Sub SB. Subsequent Ms were higher in parities 2-6. Extending lactation length for 15-21 days resulted in higher (p<0.05) Sub LB for parity 1 nurse sows. A similar ELL (15-21 days) resulted in significant (p<0.05) Sub Ms for P3 nurse sows. No effect (p>0.05) of any ELL on Sub SB was observed. An optimal balance between piglet weaning outcomes and future reproductive performance can be achieved by selecting younger sows and carefully managing extended lactation length.

Megjegyzések:Reproductive performance in pig production has gained genetic momentum resulting in large litters. Several strategies have been used to raise the number of piglets to address the challenge of a large litter size. This review provides a rationale for employing the nurse sow system as a biological way of handling large litters, exploring its step-by-step processes and its selected impacts. By exposing these steps, pig farmers will use the information to pinpoint their weak points in the chain and customize the procedures to meet their farm-specific goals for improved productivity. The nurse sow system helps to maximize pre-weaning survival by boosting the overall worth of low birth weight piglets. When piglets weaned per sow/year are used as a performance benchmark, nurse sows weaning double litters become economically advantageous. Extended time in lactation for nurse sows gives them an ample time for their uterus to involute before the next pregnancy. However, nurse sows lose their body reserves reflected in backfat thickness from high milk production. Prolonged confinement in lactation deteriorates the physical condition of nurse sows, resulting in leg ulcers and teat damage. Additionally, piglets are more distressed when taken away from their biological sow to a new sow.
