Megjegyzések:The anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a granulosa cell-derived hormone that has been associated with female fertility and reflects the population of growing follicles. This study aimed to evaluate the average concentration of AMH in Lipizzaner mares, as well as to determine the relationship between AMH concentration and follicle number and size. We also investigated the relationship between the age of mares and their AMH levels. The possible effect of seasonality of AMH levels was also assessed. Twenty-three mares between 6 and 24 years of age were included in the experiment. Mares were divided into two groups: Group 1 included mares aged 6 - 15 years (n = 11), while Group 2 included individuals older than 15 years of age (n = 12). Venous blood was collected and ovarian activity was monitored parallelly by transrectal ultrasonography. Serum AMH concentrations varied widely between the two different groups. AMH concentrations were significantly lower in old mares than in younger animals. A positive relationship was detected between AMH concentration and the number of medium-sized follicles (P = 0.022), large follicles (P = 0.016) and the total follicle count (P = 0.026). No seasonal effect was detected.

Megjegyzések:The aim of this study was to estimate the occurrence of bacterial infection and contamination in two ostrich-producing farms. Compared to other poultry species, the hatchability of ostrich eggs is especially low. In a quest to identify factors that may affect hatchability, we collected faecal samples from adult birds, as well as eggs with dead-in-shell embryos, dead chicks and swab samples from the surface of the eggs and from the environment. The samples were screened for the presence of bacteria by routine bacteriological culture methods. The most prevalent bacteria, detected in the samples, were Escherichia coli, Bacillus spp. and coliform bacteria, whereas Pseudomonas spp. were less frequently found. The intensity and species compositon of the bacterial contamination was comparable in the two farms. Our results revealed that the bacteria, present in the environment, may likely be transmitted to the surface of the eggs. If they are able to penetrate the shell then the embryos and chicks become infected easily. These findings draw the attention to the special importance of enforcing efficient decontamination and disinfection measures to keep the environment and egg surface free from germs. Besides the appropriate egg treatment procedure, the incubation and hatching technology should also be kept under control.

Megjegyzések:In small ruminants, assessing the success of superovulatory treatments can be challenging, as there is considerable variability between individual animals. The current "gold standard" for examination of the superovulated ovaries is laparoscopy. B-mode ultrasonography with a transrectal or transvaginal transducer can also be used to locate the ovarian structures. In this study, 23 Merino ewes were used to test two types of ultrasonographic examination tech- niques against laparoscopy. The ewes were treated with long-term (12 days) progesterone treatment followed by a single in- jection of eCG (1000 IU) at removal of the progesterone sponge. The animals were examined two days after sponge removal and 7 days after the first examination. The chance of localizing the ovaries was significantly higher with the transrectal method than with the vaginal ultrasonography (P > 0.05). In cases when the ovary was successfully visualized, there was a significant difference between the number of ovarian structures (antral follicles and corpora lutea) detected by transrectal ultrasonography and laparoscopy (P < 0.01). There was no significant difference between intravaginal examination and laparoscopy in this regard. The current results are promising in the usefulness of vaginal ultrasonography as an alternative to the more commonly used transrectal technique. However, more research is needed to evaluate if either the transrectal or the vaginal ultrasound examination can be completely reliable in assessing the results of a superovulatory treatment

Megjegyzések:This study was conducted to develop ideal post-mortem gamete retrieval and conservation methods to establish a Hungarian ex-situ in vitro gene bank. Pairs of testes from German Mutton Merino (n 5 7) and Hungarian Black Racka (n 5 7) rams were collected at a slaughterhouse, transported to the laboratory and stored overnight (4 5 8C) before processing. Post-mortem ram epididymal spermatozoa (REPS) were obtained from the cauda epididymidis by slice or incision methods. Fresh samples were extended to 200 3 106/mL cell concentration, filled into mini straws and equilibrated at 5 8C for 2 h. Freezing was performed manually in a Styrofoam box. The fresh and post-thaw total motility, progressive motility and kinematic parameters of REPS were assessed using the CASA technique. The collection method did not significantly affect the fresh and post-thaw motility and kinematic parameters. Merino had higher (P < 0.05) testicular weight. Racka had significantly better fresh and post-thaw linear movement but had statistically the same (P > 0.05) cryotolerance as Merino. In conclusion, both collection methods were found suitable for REPS retrieval. The REPS from Racka exhibited better linear movement values than those from the Merino breed. The cryotolerance of REPS of both breeds was comparable.

Megjegyzések:The aim of the present study was to test the FXCycle PI/RNase kit for routine DNA analyses in order to detect breeding bulls and/or insemination doses carrying cytogenetic aberrations. In a series of experiments we first established basic DNA histogram parameters of cytogenetically healthy breeding bulls by measuring the intraspecific genome size variation of three animals, then we compared the histogram profiles of bulls carrying cytogenetic defects to the baseline values. With the exception of one case the test was able to identify bulls with cytogenetic defects. Therefore, we conclude that the assay could be incorporated into the laboratory routine where flow cytometry is applied for semen quality control.

Megjegyzések:In Hungary, twenty Canis aureus individuals were submitted to parasitological examinations in 2010?2012. Two Coccidia: Cystoisospora canis (15%) and Toxoplasma-type oocysts (5%), one Trematoda: Alaria alata (10%), six Cestoda: Mesocestoides lineatus (20%), Echinococcus granulosus (10%), Dipylidium caninum (5%), Taenia hydatigena (15%), Taenia pisiformis (20%), Taenia crassiceps (40%), and nine Nematoda: Angiostrongylus vasorum (10%), Crenosoma vulpis (30%), Capillaria aerophila (5%), Toxocara canis (20%), Toxascaris leonina (15%), Trichuris vulpis (10%), Ancylostoma caninum (45%), Uncinaria stenocephala (40%), Capillaria plica (45%) have been identified. Angiostronglyus vasorum has been reported from carnivores in Europe, Africa, South America and North America. The helminth A. vasorum or French heartworm is a metastrongylid nematode, widely distributed in Western Europe, that infects the pulmonary arterial tree of dogs, various species of foxes, wolves, Eurasian badgers, coyotes, and stoats. To our knowledge, this is the first report of natural A. vasorum infection in golden jackal.
