The interactions of climatic and geochemical factors control soil organic carbon storage capacity and turnover. The comprehensive evaluation of the effect of long-term detritus manipulation on the soil organic carbon, soil-forming processes and the soil physical and chemical properties will help us better understand the carbon sequestration of forest soils. The long-term (19 years) effect of detrital input and removal treatments (DIRT) on physicochemical soil properties were investigated at a Central-European forest site (Síkfőkút, Hungary). In contrast to the results of similar experiments in other parts of the world, the detritus input treatments affected the soil organic carbon and almost all of the soil physicochemical indicators for the upper 15 cm layer. Soil pH, potential acidity and base saturation decreased in the litter removal plots and increased in the detritus doubling treatments. A decrease in organic matter content in the litter removal plots explained the changes in bulk density, as the stability of aggregates also decreased with the decrease of exchangeable bases and organic colloids. In this respect, compared to the other DIRT sites and other similar experiments in the world, our experimental site is considered unique, as it has the highest clay content and the driest climate. We conclude that potential cation exchange capacity and base saturation (exch. Ca) play a fundamental role in predicting the occurrence of the carbon sequestration mechanisms. We suggest to include these parameters into current SOC models.

Megjegyzések:
Chernozem under different agricultural land use were compared in a suburban area: three on cropland with different land use histories; one in an area of complex cultivation; one fallow; and one under grassland, considered to be in close to natural state, as a control. Soil profiles at each site were described and classified, and chemical characteristics analyzed in detail. Topsoil (0-40cm) bulk density (BD), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium lactate-extractable P, K, Ca and Mg were measured, and microbiological communities were characterized by phospholipid-fatty acid (PLFA) markers. We found significantly increased BD but decreased TOC and TN in the cultivated sites compared to the control. Values of ammonium lactate-extractable P (P-AL) were higher at the natural site, but Ca-AL, Mg-AL and K-AL content of the cultivated and mineral-fertilized agricultural sites were higher than or equal to the grassland site. Total microbiological activity correlates significantly positively with TOC and TN and negatively with the BD. Sites with perennial vegetation cover and higher biodiversity showed greater microbiological activity and, in case of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, actinobacteria and anaerobe bacteria, the differences are significant. Despite the nutrient depletion and lesser microbiological activity, cropland sites preserved their taxonomic status as Chernozem. Sites that have undergone more extreme human impacts before the recent land use had lost their diagnostic features (aggregation, color, secondary carbonate accumulation) and now key out as Kastanozem, Phaeozem or Regosol.

Megjegyzések:
Following a comparison of the practical applicability of USDA Soil Taxonomy (ST), Hungarian soil classification (HU), and WRB in a slightly saline alluvial plot (T?oth et al., 2021), in this study, we compared the polygon alignment derived from the three systems, relative to the pattern of elevation and mean NDVI. The final objective focused on delineating potential management zones. The study plot is the largest salt-affected plot in the country (0.9 km2). Within this plot, 85 undisturbed, 1 m deep profiles were collected, sampled, described and classified using a 100 ? 100 m grid. We described the polygon alignment qualitatively and through the use of landscape metrics. Additionally, we evaluated number of classes and polygons, and delineated potential management zones based on environmental variables. Large dominant polygons were found at level 1, the least detailed of all three classifications. The polygons became increasingly fragmented at levels 2, 3 and 4, where isolated single raster cell polygons dominated the plot in each classification: 96 % in WRB, 73 % in HU and 70 % in ST, compared to the total number of polygons. Landscape metrics proved that ST exhibited the best north?south orientation (the orientation of highs/lows), length, perimeter, area, aggregation and interspersion/juxtaposition of polygons. HU showed an intermediate performance, while WRB had the least satisfactory alignment with the north?south orientation, length, perimeter and area, as well as patch cohesion and aggregation of polygons. After analyzing the scatterplot of elevation versus mean NDVI, and also elevation versus long-term NDVI range, we noted a cutpoint of 95.47 m, which separated the more productive and less variable zone from the lower lying less productive less certain zone, given its periodical precipitation-related waterlogging.
