Megjegyzések:Particle-bound pollutants are a critical risk factor for human respiratory/cardiovascular conditions. A comprehensive analysis of the physicochemical characteristics of PM is often challenging since it requires combining different practical methods with a good understanding the of characterization outputs. The present review aims to (1) provide a comprehensive assessment of the underlying mechanisms of PM cytotoxicity and the related biological response; (2) evaluate the selected methods for PM characterization in terms of outputs, technical aspects, challenges, and sample preparation; (3) present effective means of studying PM physicochemical toxicity and composition; and (4) provide recommendations for enhancing the human health risk assessment. The cellular response to potentially toxic elements in PM is complex to understand as exposure includes systemic inflammation, increased ROS accumulation, and oxidative stress. A comprehensive toxicity assessment requires blending morphological features and chemical composition data. For the morphological/chemical characterization, we recommend first using SEM-EDS as a practical method for the single-particle analysis. Then, the bulk chemistry of PM can be further studied using either a dry analysis (e.g., XRF) or wet analysis techniques (e.g., ICP and IC). Finally, when used on a need basis, the reviewed complementary laboratory methods may further add valuable information to the characterization. The accuracy of the human health risk assessment may be improved using bioaccessible/soluble fractions of the contaminants instead of the total contaminant concentration. Having an integrated understanding of the covered analytical methods along with the health risk assessment guidelines would contribute to research on atmospheric chemistry, molecular biology, and public health while helping researchers better characterize human exposure to PM and the associated adverse health effects.

Megjegyzések:Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is increasingly acknowledged as an essential component of sustainable environmental performance (SEP), but the mechanisms behind this relationship are poorly understood, particularly in the case of SMEs in developing nations. Based on the Natural Resource-Based View (RBV) theory, this study investigates how green capability (GC) and green transformational leadership (GTL) mediate the CSR-SEP relationship, with a focus on the moderating function of perceived organizational support (POS). A survey of 420 SME employees in Bangladesh was undertaken, and the results were examined using SPSS and AMOS for structural equation modeling. The fndings indicate that CSR greatly improves SEP. Furthermore, GC and GTL act as key mediators, increasing the CSR-SEP relationship. Furthermore, POS moderates the correlations between CSR and SEP, as well as GTL and SEP, implying that organizational support can strengthen or weaken these links. These fndings demonstrate the diverse role of CSR in promoting environmental sustainability in many economic circumstances. The study provides practical implications for SMEs and policymakers, emphasizing the strategic signifcance of leadership and organizational support in improving CSR-driven sustainability eforts.

Megjegyzések:Former industrially contaminated sites are a burden from the past that still pose environmental risks. During the second half of the 20th century, the Pavlodar region in North Kazakhstan had been a part of Soviet Union's industrial system that operated a chlor-alkali plant (CAP). The former CAP discharged approximately 135 t Hg into nearby Lake Balkyldak with total losses to water, soil, and air estimated around 1000 t. Pollution by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) due to former and currently active industrial enterprises is an under-investigated concern in the Pavlodar region. The present study aims to provide a much-needed update on the situation around the CAP area by evaluating the contamination by Hg and other selected PTEs (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Zn) on the surrounding environment of the CAP and in the nearby urban zone. Soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater samples have been collected in several sampling campaigns carried out in 2018 and 2019. Several samples had Hg concentrations exceeding maximum permissible concentrations (MPC), for soils and sediments (in mg/kg; range: 0.0006 to 24, average: 0.56) and for surface water and groundwater (in ?g/L; range: 0.004 to 1340, average: 93). Critically high concentrations were mostly measured in the vicinity of Lake Balkyldak, where the majority of Hg had been discharged by the former CAP, indicating persisting Hg pollution in the studied zone. A comparison of the PTEs concentrations in soil and sediments showed less severe pollution but still some elevated values for As, Ba, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Se. The inter-elemental relationship between Hg and assessed PTEs was weak, indicating the presence of sources independent from Hg emitting sources. Further research on Hg contamination on the exact territory of the former CAP is needed, and a detailed human health risk characterization to identify potential unacceptable risks is strongly recommended. ? 2021 by the authors. Megjegyzések:Theintroduction of large language models (LLMs) has significantly influenced learning and learning assessments, dividing the academic community with arguments for and against their implementation. This study investigates how LLMs can be effectively incorporated into student assignments on sustainable development in local communities. In that regard, the study pairs traditional, community-oriented tasks with emerging frameworks for structured LLM use, emphasizing that output quality depends on prompt quality. Accordingly, several prompting frameworks were outlined, and the suitability of ChatGPT and Gemini for specific assignment tasks was assessed. The effectiveness of the approach was evaluated with a survey of two student groups: one using supervised LLM support (23 students) and another using LLMs independently (17 students). Compared to the unsupervised group, the supervised group reported that the frameworks enhanced project preparedness, fostered critical thinking, and reduced reliance on mentors. The supervising mentor noted a slightly lower workload than in earlier projects, while the mentor of the unsupervised group reported higher effort in guiding and refining outcomes. Overall, the findings suggest that guided LLM integration has the potential to improve learning, deepen critical engagement, foster independence, and reduce mentor workload when compared to those whodonotprovide structured guidance in LLM use.

Megjegyzések:Industrial activities have resulted in severe environmental contamination that may expose rural and urban populations to unacceptable health risks. For example, chlor-alkali plants (CAPs) have historically contributed mercury (Hg) contamination in different environmental compartments. One such site (a burden from the Soviet Union) is located in an industrial complex in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. Earlier studies showed the CAP operating in the second half of the twentieth century caused elevated Hg levels in soil, water, air, and biota. However, follow-up studies with thorough risk characterization are missing. The present study aims to provide a detailed risk characterization based on the data from a recent site assessment around the former CAP. rThe Sigma HI (hazard index) ranged from 9.30 x 10(-4) to 0.125 (deterministic method) and from 5.19 x 10(-4) to 2.54 x 10(-2) (probabilistic method). The results indicate acceptable excess human health risks from exposure to Hg contamination in the region, i.e., exposure to other Hg sources not considered. Air inhalation and soil ingestion pathways contributed to the highest Sigma HI values (up to 99.9% and 92.0%, respectively). The residential exposure scenario (among four) presented the greatest human health risks, with Sigma HI values ranging from 1.23 x 10(-2) to 0.125. Although the local urban and rural population is exposed to acceptable risks coming from exposure to Hg-contaminated environmental media, an assessment of contamination directly on the former CAP site on the industrial complex could not be performed due to access prohibition. Furthermore, the risks from ingesting contaminated fish were not covered as methyl-Hg was not targeted. An additional assessment may be needed for the scenarios of exposure of workers on the industrial complex and of the local population consuming fish from contaminated Lake Balkyldak. Studies on the fate and transport of Hg in the contaminated ecosystem are also recommended considering Hg methylation and subsequent bioaccumulation in the food chain.

Dátum:2021
ISSN:2071-1050
Megjegyzések:In addition to the examination of electric power from local renewables, this study has sought the answer to the question of what proportion of vehicles are fueled by environmentally friendly energy saving technologies in the vehicle fleets of Hungarian settlements. Further, the study attempts to shed light on the self-sufficiency of Hungarian settlements with respect to the electricity and transport segments. In our assessments, the performance of small-scale household power plants (SSHPPs) utilizing local renewable energy sources, and small-scale power plants with installed capacities under 0.5 MW, was taken into account, as were the proportions of vehicles operating with partly or completely clean energy sources in the vehicle fleets of the individual settlements. Finally, the composition of the vehicle fleet has been examined in the light of the quantities of renewable electricity generated in the individual settlements, in order to consider whether these settlements are capable of covering the energy needs of their vehicle stocks from local sources. In the light of the results, the changes generated by the incentives and investments introduced over the past ten years can be established and subsequently, the energy policy needs in the future can be assessed. Our study has incorporated energy geography and settlement geography aspects.
