Megjegyzések:
Pharmaceuticals and microplastics are persistent emerging contaminants that pose significant risks to aquatic ecosystems and ecological health. Although extensively reviewed individually, a comprehensive, integrated assessment of their environmental pathways, bioaccumulation dynamics, and toxicological impacts remains limited. This review synthesizes current research on the environmental fate and impact of pharmaceuticals and microplastics, emphasizing their combined influence on aquatic organisms and ecosystems. This review provides a thorough and comprehensive examination of their predominant pathways, sources, and distribution, highlighting wastewater disposal, agricultural runoff, and atmospheric deposition. Studies indicate that pharmaceuticals, such as antibiotics and painkillers, are detected in concentrations ranging from ng/L to ?g/L in surface waters, while MPs are found in densities up to 106 particles/m3 in some marine and freshwater systems. The toxicological effects of these pollutants on aquatic organisms, particularly fish, are discussed, with emphasis on bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the food chain, physiological effects including effects on growth, reproduction, immune system performance, and behavioral changes. The ecological consequences, including disruptions to trophic dynamics and ecosystem stability, are also addresse. Although valuable efforts, mitigation and remediation strategies remain inadequate, and further research is needed because they do not capture the scale and complexity of these hazards. This review highlights the urgent need to advance treatment technologies, establish comprehensive regulatory frameworks, and organize intensive research on long-term ecological impacts to address the environmental threats posed by pharmaceuticals and microplastics.

The evaluation, visualization of environmental data from long-term monitoring and making them accessible in a processed form in user-friendly interfaces on the internet are important tasks of our time. The pollution of groundwater resources in settlements is a global phenomenon, the mitigation of which requires a number of environmental measures. In this study, water quality changes following the construction of a sewerage network were examined in the course of long-term monitoring between 2013 and 2022, during which 40 municipal groundwater wells were regularly sampled. Classifying the monitoring data into pollution categories based on water quality index (WQI) and degree of contamination index (Cd), a high degree of contamination was found in the period before the installation of the sewerage network (2014), as the majority of the wells were classified as contaminated and heavily contaminated. In the monitoring period following the installation of the sewerage network, a significant positive change was found in the case of most of the water chemical parameters tested (EC, NH4 + , NO2-, NO3 - , PO4 3- ). Based on interpolated maps, it was found that an increasing part of the area shows satisfactory or good water quality. This was confirmed by the discriminant analysis as well, as it is possible to determine with an accuracy of 80.4% whether the given sample originates from the period before or after the installation of the sewerage network based on the given water chemical parameters. However, 8 years after setting up the sewerage network, the concentration of inorganic nitrogen forms and organic matter remains high, indicating that the accumulated pollutants in the area are still present. To understand the dynamics of purification processes, additional, long-term monitoring is necessary. Making these data available to members of the society can contribute to appropriate environmental measures and strategies.

Megjegyzések:
Microplastics (MP) pollution is an emerging threat to life and the environment. These particles are not restricted to human-inhabited lands but also found in different mountains and glaciers where the human population is relatively low. These MPs make their way to the river ecosystem from glaciers, rains, and municipal and industrial effluents. The current study was designed to highlight MPs' pollution in water, sediments, and fishes of the Swat River: originating from the Hindu Kush Mountain Range. These samples were collected from eight different sites across the river. An average concentration of MPs detected in water samples (305.79 +/- 289.66 MPs/m(3)), fish (12.54 +/- 8.02 MPs/individual), and sediments (588.29 +/- 253.95 MPs/kg). The highest concentration was observed among water samples at Mingora city and the lowest at the confluence point of the rivers near Charsadda being 753.71 +/- 330.08 MPs/m(3) and 57.64 +/- 31.98 MPs/m(3), respectively. MP concentrations in the sediment samples were also the highest at Mingora city (834.0 +/- 367.21 MPs/kg), and lowest at Chakdara (215.0 +/- 20.0 MPs/kg). Among the fish samples, Schizothorax plagiostomus contained the highest while Wallago attu contained the lowest MP concentrations corresponding to 17.08 +/- 8.27 MPs/individual and 5.0 +/- 2.36 MPs/individual, respectively. Fibers were the most prevalent MPs in all the matrices representing 80%, 92%, and 85% of the total MP count in water, sediments, and fish samples. These findings highlighted that freshwater ecosystem are not free from MPs and are as much vulnerable to anthropogenic activities as marine ecosystem. Therefore, need attention not less than marine ecosystem awareness, education, ecotourism, sustainable reduction in plastic use, and strict rules and regulations could be helpful to prevent the anthropogenic menace.

Honeybee (Apis mellifera) mediated increased reproductive success of a rare deceptive orchid / É. Biró, J. Bódis, T. Nagy, J. Tökölyi, A. Molnár V.

Megjegyzések:
Honeybees are the most numerous and significant among insect pollinators, but despite their significance their potential role in increasing the reproductive success of threatened European orchids remains largely unexplored. In this study we aim to evaluate the effect of apiary proximity on the fructification rate of the rare and endangered Adriatic Lizard Orchid (Himantoglossum adriaticum H. Baumann). To do so, first we quantified the reproductive success (fruit set) of the Adriatic Lizard Orchids in a Hungarian population in close proximity to a honeybee apiary at Nagytevel. Then we compared the reproductive success in this population to the reproductive success in 3 other Hungarian, 4 Croatian populations (observed during the same year, 2013) and further 4 populations from Hungary (studied in previous years, 1992?2011) with no apiaries in the close proximity of these. The realised 61.7 % fruit set at Nagytevel is the highest reproductive success ever recorded for this species. The importance of apiaries is further emphasised by the fact that the reproductive success of Lizard Orchid individuals decreased significantly with increasing distance from the apiary. Our results provide empirical support for the conservation importance of apiculture and suggest promising results for practical application of apiaries in the conservation of of deceptively pollinated orchids characterised by lower fruit set (e.g. Orchis, Anacamptis, Himantoglossum).

Grassland fires in Hungary : experiences of nature conservationists on the effects of fire on biodiversity / Deák Balázs, Valkó Orsolya, Török Péter, Végvári Zsolt, Hartel Tibor, Schmotzer András, Kapocsi István, Tóthmérész Béla

Megjegyzések:
Fire as a natural disturbance has been present in most European grasslands. Controlled burning was also an important component of the traditional landscape management for millennia. It was mainly used to reduce litter and woody vegetation and to maintain open landscapes suitable for farming. Due to socio-economical changes traditional and sustainable use of fire was ceased and replaced by arsons and technical fires in Europe. Despite its wide application in the past and the considerable extension and frequency of current grassland fires, the impact of fire on the grassland biodiversity is still scarcely documented in Europe. The aim of this study is to offer a perspective on the issue of fire impact on grasslands, by overviewing published information and practical experiences from Hungary. Our results suggest that fire can be detrimental for several taxa (e.g. insects or ground-dwelling birds), but can also promote population growth of several endangered species by reducing litter or by creating and maintaining open habitats. We also found that fire may be effective in controlling invasive plant species. The effect of fire on grassland biodiversity may be rather context-dependent. There is a critical need for developing robust evidences on the context-dependence of fire effect on biodiversity. For this, well designed prescribed burning experiments are crucial.

Survival of fish upon removal of cyanide from water / Mariann Gacsi, Ildiko Czegeny, Gabor Nagy, Gaspar Banfalvi
Dátum:
2005
ISSN:

Megjegyzések:
The effects of potassium cyanide and the removal of cyanide from water in vivo on the survival of fish were investigated. This research was initiated because of the catastrophe that took place at the end of January 2000 in the Carpathian basin, when an enormous amount of cyanide pollution swept through the Samos and Tisza rivers, and then to the Danube. Since nothing was done against the disaster, we have suggested a chemical solution to remove cyanide from waterways (Chem. Innovat. 30 (2000b) 53). Based on experiments, we describe that the most effective and harmless way to remove cyanide and to save the lives of fish from 40 to 160 x the lethal doses of cyanide is to use carbogen gas containing 5% carbon dioxide and 95% oxygen followed by aeration with air.

Megjegyzések:
Wetlands play a critical role in water purification and biodiversity maintenance, yet many are increasingly affected by anthropogenic pollution. This study provides a comparative assessment of physicochemical, microbiological, and heavy metal parameters in six Algerian wetlands spanning coastal, highland, and desert regions over a full annual cycle (November 2021?October 2022). Twenty-five indicators were measured across polluted and non-polluted sites. Polluted wetlands showed significantly higher turbidity (Z= -3.678, p<0.001), organic matter (Z= -2.123, p=0.04), and heavy metals including Cu (Z= -4.234, p<0.001), Fe (Z= -3.123, p=0.002), and Pb (Z= -3.789, p<0.001). Dissolved oxygen was consistently lower in polluted sites (Z= -2.345, p=0.02). Highland wetlands exhibited elevated nutrient loads, with nitrates (Z=-2.789, p=0.01) and ammonium (Z=-3.123, p=0.002) reflecting agricultural inputs. Microbiological contamination exceeded recommended thresholds at all polluted sites, with fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci surpassing 1000 CFU/100 ml. Seasonal analysis showed higher microbial loads in the wet season and concentration of nutrients in the dry season. Overall, the results demonstrate clear spatial and seasonal variation in water quality, with polluted sites across all regions exceeding national and WHO guideline values for nutrients, heavy metals, and microbiological indicators. These findings underscore the need for strengthened monitoring and pollution-control measures in Algerian wetlands.

Occurrence pattern analysis of dragonflies (Odonata) on the River Tisza between Vilok and Huszt based on exuviae / Kolozsvári István, Szabó László József, Dévai György
Dátum:

ISSN:

Megjegyzések:
Dragonfly exuviae were collected between 2010 and 2013 in the following sections of River Tisza: Vilok (Tiszaújlak), Nove Szelo (Tiszaújhely), Tiszobikeny (Tiszabökény), Vinohragyiv (Nagyszőlős) and Huszt (Huszt). Based on the examination of the 1965 exuviae, collected from 13 main channel sections, 6 dragonfly species were identified [Gomphus vulgatissimus (Linnaeus, 1758), Gomphus flavipes (Charpentier, 1825), Onychogomphus forcipatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Ophiogomphus cecilia (Fourcroy, 1785), Calopteryx splendens (Harris, 1782), Platycnemis pennipes (Pallas, 1771)]. Summing up the collected exuviae, the two most frequent species were G. vulgatissimus (57.3%) and O. forcipatus (39.08%), however significant assemblages of O. cecilia (1.93%), G. flavipes (1.17%), C. splendens (0.36%) and P. pennipes (0.15%) could be found as well. In compliance with the Mantel test the channel and riverbank characteristics show a significant correlation with the composition of dragonfly assemblages (R=0.309, p=0 024). According to the canonical correspondence analysis (15 habitat characteristics) the exuviae data of G. vulgatissimus are connected with the extent of plant coverage, the closure of foliage and the characteristics of riverbanks; the exuviae data of O. forcipatus are associated with water depth, channel deepening tendency, water temperature and type of plant coverage on the river bank.

Megjegyzések:
The degree of similarity/dissimilarity between landscapes is important information for landscape classification, potential assessment and evaluation. In geographical assessments, similarity in landscape functioning and visual attributes is commonly analysed by using landscape factors (e.g., relief, water balance and soil fertility), land use and built-up area. In this study the similarity and dissimilarity of Hungarian landscape units were investigated to reveal the appropriateness and uncertainty of the current delimitation methods. Nine indicators for 230 landscape units, delineated by the traditional methods, were integrated into a data matrix. Dissimilarity coefficients were calculated for each unit to determine the Euclidean distance between all indicators. Dissimilarity analysis was performed by multidimensional scaling using Kruskal's stress test and hierarchical clustering. The applied method enabled a more objective determination of taxonomic distance. Based on the results, the similarity and dissimilarity of landscapes could be evaluated by more accurate and quantitative datasets. Several neighbouring landscape units should require increased attention in spatial planning because these landscapes differ from each other: they belong to different clusters based on the investigated indicators, though they are adjacent.
