Cím:Noise Barrier Design Of A Railway Viaduct / Odeh Omar, Bite Maria, Kocsis Dénes
Dátum:2024
Megjegyzések:New constructions can negatively impact the environment and human health. Therefore, noise modelling is employed to predict the environmental noise levels during the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) phase and maintain noise levels below specified limits by applying various mitigation measures, if necessary. In this work, a comprehensive examination consisting of modelling and measurements was conducted to accurately design a noise barrier around a viaduct in a commercial-residential area. The study area comprises 3 towers which consist of 12 retail units that vary in size, 423 residential units, and multiple parking lots. An urban railway viaduct line connecting an International Airport to the center of the city of dense population was established before the construction of the 3 towers. Therefore, the study was prompted due to sleep disturbance complaints from the tower residents caused by the impact of railway noise. Thorough noise measurements were conducted at the most sensitive locations of the towers followed by a noise modelling study (SoundPLAN 9.0 noise modelling software was utilized) to explore diverse noise barrier design solutions, adhering to local standards, as well as ISO and DIN standards to ensure a very high level of accuracy. The findings revealed that noise levels exceeded the limit value for daytime and night-time at all noise receptors with an average difference of 0.2 dB(A) between the measurements and the model. The study evaluated five noise barrier design scenarios, and the proposed noise barrier demonstrated a noise reduction ranging from 5 to 21 dB(A) at different receptors, with an average reduction of 10.8 dB(A).

Noise modelling plays a very important role in predicting noise levels during the design phase to ensure that new constructions will not have adverse effects on the environment and humans' health by applying various mitigation measures to keep noise levels below the limit value. In this work, the Public Address and General Alarm (PAGA) system of a fire station building in Doha, Qatar was evaluated to ensure full coverage of speakers and maintain speech intelligibility in all premises of the building. For that, an indoor noise modelling study followed by mitigation measures was performed using SounPLAN 9.0. Two main parameters were in focus: total noise (LAeq) for the speakers' coverage and the Speech Transmission Index (STI), for the speech intelligibility. Generally, STI ratings over 0.45 are sufficient (reaching at least "fair" level) and LAeq with minimum 15 dB higher than the background noise satisfies the audibility. The complexity in this work appeared when the clarity of the sound could not be achieved in all areas without installing extra speakers, taking into account that the maximum allowed noise in terms of HSE Occupational Noise Level (85 dB(A)) was not to be exceeded on any of the premises. Several mitigation measures were examined, and the most applicable option was recommended taking into consideration workers' health, availability of speakers in the market, and cost efficiency. The solution for this case study with the most significant challenges is presented in this work.
