Megjegyzések:The key to effective patient care is the patient`s proper cooperation, so it is important to examine the beliefs about medicine and self-management among diabetes patients. Therefore, the primary aim of the study was to investigate the attitude toward metformin medication and self-management of adult patients with diabetes in Hungary. A total of 591 metformin-taking diabetes patients completed the Beliefs about Medicine Questionnaire, while 283 metformin-taking diabetes patients completed the Environmental Barrier Assessment Scale. Multivariate regression analysis was conducted to investigate which socio-demographic factors influence the beliefs regarding medicines and various environmental barriers to diabetes self-management. Participants who reported a good or very good financial status were more likely to feel the need to take metformin compared to those perceiving bad or very bad financial status (coef = 0.25; p = 0.020). Respondents between 55-64 years and those older than 65 were significantly less concerned about metformin than those aged 18-24 years (coef = -0.47; p = 0.028 and coef = -0.41; p = 0.047). Participants with secondary education were significantly less likely to think that metformin was harmful than those with primary education (coef = -0.50; p = 0.009). In addition, those aged 35 or older saw more barriers to taking medication than those aged 18-24 years (35-44: coef = -0.54; p = 0.020; 45-54: coef = -1.15; p < 0.001; 55-64: coef = -1.06; p < 0.001; 65 years or older: coef = -1.48; p < 0.001). Also, significant negative association was found for several factors (such as age, education, self-reported financial status, subjective health status) with barriers regarding exercise. Overall, socio-demographic factors significantly impact both the attitude toward medicine and diabetes self-management. However, the impact considerably varies according to different beliefs and environmental barriers. To further improve drug adherence and self-management for diabetes, doctors should take into consideration the relevant socio-demographic factors when communicating with their patients.

Megjegyzések:The COVID-19 pandemic had a considerable impact on the whole health sector, particularly on emergency services. Our aim was to examine the performance of the Hungarian National Ambulance Service during the first four waves of the pandemic. We defined the 2019 performance of the service as the baseline and compared it with the activity during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. The data contained deliveries related to acute myocardial infarction, hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke, overall non-COVID-related ambulance deliveries, COVID screenings performed by the ambulance service, and COVID-related ambulance deliveries. The data were aggregated for each week of the investigated time period and stratified by gender and age. Compared with the pre-pandemic era, we found a significant increase in all three medical conditions and overall deliveries (p < 0.001 in all cases). As a result of the increased burden, it is important for emergency services to prepare for the next global epidemic and to improve organizational performance and rescue activities. The Hungarian example highlights that in a pandemic, it can be beneficial to organize the emergency care of a country or a larger region under a single provider with a single decision maker supported by business intelligence.

Megjegyzések:The goal of this study was to translate the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire ? Specific (BMQ-Specific) for cholesterol-lowering drugs, into the Hungarian, Slovak, Czech and Polish languages and test their reliability with statistical methods. For this purpose, Cronbach's alpha, confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses were conducted. The analyses included 235 Czech, 205 Hungarian, 200 Polish, and 200 Slovak respondents, all of whom were taking cholesterollowering drugs. The translations from English into the target languages were always done by two independent translators. As part of the validation process these translations were pilot tested and after the necessary alterations, they were translated back into English by a third translator. After the approval by the creator of the questionnaire, nationwide surveys were conducted in all four countries. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis were exceptionally good for the Czech and Slovak translations, while the Polish and Hungarian translations marginally crossed the predetermined thresholds. With the exception of a single Polish question, the results of the exploratory factor analysis were deemed acceptable. The translated versions of BMQ-Specific are reliable and valid tools to assess patients' beliefs about medication, especially medication adherence among patients taking cholesterol-lowering medication. A comparison between the four countries with this questionnaire is now possible.

Megjegyzések:Studies in the alcohol consumption area are mostly related to the (ab)use of alcohol in young people. However, today, a growing number of researchers are emphasizing the clinical and public health significance of alcohol consumption in the elderly. In the WHO reports, harmful alcohol consumption is responsible for 5.3% of the global burden of the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of alcohol consumption among men and women aged 55 and over in Serbia and Hungary, leveraging data from the 2013 Serbian National Health Survey and from the 2014 Hungarian National Health Survey. Respondents aged 55 and over were analysed based on logistic multivariate models. The prevalence of alcohol consumption was 41.5% and 62.5% in Serbia and Hungary, respectively. It was higher among men in both countries, but among women, it was significantly higher in Hungary than in Serbia. The statistically significant predictors affecting alcohol consumption in Serbia included age, education, well-being index, long-term disease and overall health status, with marital status being an additional factor among men. In Hungary, education and long-term disease affected alcohol consumption in both sexes, while age and employment were additional factors among women. In both countries for both sexes, younger age, more significantly than primary education and good health, was associated with a higher likelihood of alcohol consumption.
