Megjegyzések:We tested several sample pre-Treatment protocols for the study of oxygen isotope ratios in the phosphate phase of mammalian enamel of ten different fossil samples. We investigated the effect of different pre-Treatment methods and the duration of the hydrogen fluoride treatment on enamel samples from skeletal phosphate with known ?18O values. The samples had been measured previously, so we could compare the ratios measured in our laboratory with the previous values to choose the best chemical preparation procedure. Four pre-soaking methods and two different time intervals of 2 mol dm-3 hydrogen fluoride treatment were compared during our experiments. In our experimental conditions, the distilled water wash and the 6 h of soaking in hydrogen fluoride gave the closest results to the expected ?-values. The steps of the tested preparation processes were repeated at least three times on each sample, so the reproducibility of the process could be also investigated.

Cím:Oxygen isotope ratio measurements on bioapatite samples prepared from mammal tissues: method development at ICER Centre / Kiss Gabriella, Túri Marianna, Futó István, Kovács János, Szabó Péter, Palcsu László
Dátum:2019

Megjegyzések:To get more information about the changes of the palaeoclimatic conditions on Earth, many method can be used, especially, stable isotope measurements on different elements. Beside the stable isotope analysis of hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen, which can provide interesting facts about the environment and diet in case of modern samples, the stable isotope measurements of other elements like oxygen can complete these informations with other data, for example the environmental water temperature, in case of older samples. During this work we compared some different preparation methods for oxygen isotope analysis of biological apatites. To carry out these measurements, well preserved tissues should be used for the chemical processes, for example scales, teeth or bone pieces/powder. During our experiments the effect of the different precleaning methods (a. distilled water; b. 1 M calcium acetate?acetic acid buffer solution; c. 10 % hydrogen peroxide and 1 M calcium acetate?acetic acid buffer solution; d. 12 % sodium hypochlorite and 1 M calcium acetate?acetic acid buffer solution) and the duration of the hydrogen-fluoride treatment (6, 12, and 24 hours) were examined. The preparation methods were tested on enamel samples (mainly Stephanorphinus sp.), with a well known and previously published d18Ophosphate vs. VSMOW values between +11 ? and +20 ? (Szabó et al., 2017). The phosphate d18O ratio of the bioapatite was measured in silver phosphate precipitation form. The measurements were carried out on a Thermo Finnigan Delta plus XP isotope ratio mass spectrometer with a TC/EA high temperature elemental analyzer. Through these investigations the relation between the shift in the measured isotope ratios and the precleaning or preparation processes can be brightened. With these comparisons and investigations, our goal is to develop an accurate and precise method for the oxygen isotope analysis of bioapatite at the ICER Centre

Megjegyzések:Hydromorphic soils are often characterized by redoximorphic pedofeatures like ferromanganese nodules. As the highly varying properties of the nodules are sensitive indicators of the pedogenic processes and redox history of the soil, their isotopic study may get a deeper insight into the soil genesis. In this study, the Fe isotopic characteristics, fabric, and mineralogy of ferromanganese nodules formed in six hydromorphic soil profiles were investigated using MC-ICP-MS, EPMA, and XRD analyses. We aimed to relate the Fe isotopic composition of the bulk soils and nodules to the varying conditions of hydromorphism and the various properties of the nodules. Although the extent of hydromorphism could be related to the nodules' properties, such a relationship was not found with their Fe isotopic characteristics. The reductive dissolution of primary Fe minerals resulted in similar Fe isotope distribution characteristics for the bulk soils. However, specific features of hydromorphic conditions (like frequency of the redox cycles, relocation of water fluctuation zone, external Fe input, and inhibition of leaching) affected the Fe isotope characteristics of both bulk soils and nodules. The minimum & delta;56Fe value within the soil profile indicated the deepest part where precipitation of light Fe may dominate over its leaching. Above this depth, the isotopically light Fe precipitated to form the nodules. However, the higher frequency of the reductive conditions was responsible for the higher mobilization of isotopically light Fe below this depth. The isotopic characteristics of the nodules supported that authigenic Fe-oxyhydroxides were enriched in the light Fe isotope. The Fe isotope composition of a given soil horizon and its nodules result from a complex interaction of different processes whose effect varies from profile to profile. The integrated study of the Fe isotope characteristics of hydromorphic soils and their nodules may help follow several pedogenic processes and conditions.

Megjegyzések:The end-Triassic extinction (ETE) ranks as one of the 'Big Five' biotic crises of the Phanerozoic and is thought to be triggered by volcanism of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP). However, the proximal causes of the extinction and the factors responsible for the delayed biotic recovery remain debated. Here we use uranium isotopes and geochemical models to constrain the evolution of global seafloor anoxia during the latest Triassic and earliest Jurassic. We document a major negative uranium isotope anomaly from carbonates in a western Tethyan continuous marine Triassic-Jurassic boundary section. The onset of the delta U-238 anomaly is coincident with the initial negative carbon isotope anomaly that is correlative with the extinction horizon and a major pulse of intrusive CAMP volcanism. The U isotope values remain low throughout most of the Hettangian indicating persistent, widespread anoxia. Our coupled C-P-U Earth system and U-cycle box model results show that the maximum extent of anoxia (similar to 13%) was reached 200-250 kyr after the extinction, probably as a consequence of extrusive CAMP pulses. The anoxic extent remained high (1-6%) throughout the Hettangian. We suggest that the continuing volcanic activity, recorded by the successive negative carbon isotope anomalies and Hg peaks in the section, inhibited any rapid recovery from anoxia. Our results indicate that the spread of marine anoxia and the ETE have a common cause rather than a cause-and-effect relationship but anoxia played a key role in hindering the biotic recovery of benthic ecosystems following the extinction.

Megjegyzések:Although the general geomorphology is reasonably well understood, not much information is available on the incision rates of rivers and related tectonic uplift in the central parts of the Balkan Peninsula. Caves in the lower part of Crna Reka drainage (N. Macedonia) provide the possibility to reconstruct the Neogene-Quaternary evolution of this area, as previous research has identified two major cave development phases: one related to Pliocene-Early Pleistocene basin infilling and establishment of lacustrine environments, and a subsequent cave development phase related to valley incision due to draining of the lacustrine systems and tectonic uplift. Here, we present new geochronological data obtained by U-Th dating on speleothems and cosmogenic nuclide burial age determination of clastic cave sediments, that provide time constraints on the Pleistocene karst and valley evolution, and an insight into the related tectonic uplift. The obtained cosmogenic nuclide burial age (2.1 +/- 0.5 Ma) of the clastic cave sediments from Temna Pestera - Dragozel, further supports previous results on placing the onset of the draining of the Pliocene lakes in Macedonia in the Early Pleistocene. The similar timing obtained for the downstream and upstream parts of Crna Reka drainage suggests that the draining was more likely initiated by regional uplift, rather than headward erosion related to subsidence in the Aegean Sea. The Middle to Late Pleistocene age of the dated speleothems agrees well with the existing conceptual model for karst and landscape evolution in the area. The cumulative valley incision rates based on these radiometric data show an increase towards the present, with values of <0.1 m/ka in Early Pleistocene, increasing to similar to 0.2-0.5 m/ka in Middle Pleistocene, and up to 1 m/ka in Late Pleistocene. They are lower than the measured uplift rates in the area (1.1-1.2 m/ka), and mostly overlap with the range of GPS-based vertical deformation rates in the Hellenides. Higher Middle to Late Pleistocene uplift rate is inferred in the downstream part of Crna Reka, an area in the Vardar zone bounded by seismogenic faults, than in the upstream part, at the easternmost edge of the Pelagonian massif.

Megjegyzések:Rationale Complete decomposition of silicate rock matrices is crucial in determining their isotopic compositions, but acid dissolution in a high-pressure steel-jacketed bomb, which has been the only powerful, effective technique thus far, is time-consuming and expensive. Rock dissolution using ammonium bifluoride (ABF), as described here, is a viable alternative. Methods Geological reference materials (GRMs) were digested using ABF in closed Teflon beakers at temperatures of 220/230 degrees C in a convection oven and subsequently treated with HNO3. Hf-Sr-Nd were separated and purified using ion-exchange chemistry columns calibrated for 50-2 mg samples. The isotopic compositions of Sr-Nd were measured by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry, while that of Hf by Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, both with normal 10(11) omega and gain calibrated 10(13) omega amplifiers. Results Total procedural blanks of our protocol are 0.5 ng for Sr, 0.2 ng for Nd and <25 pg for Hf. Test runs with GRMs, ranging in composition from basic to felsic and dissolved in ABF, yield accurate Sr-87/Sr-86, Nd-143/Nd-144 and Hf-176/Hf-177 isotope ratios as compared with those obtained with the bomb dissolution technique. Reproducibilities were comparable, on the order of 10-20 ppm. Our technique allows combined Hf-Sr-Nd isotope analyses of low-mass (50-2 mg) samples. Conclusions The ABF digestion is an alternative technique to high-pressure bomb dissolution in matrix decomposition for accurate and reproducible Hf-Nd-Sr isotope analyses of geological samples within a reasonable time (3-4 days), with high sample throughput and low costs in geochemistry and environmental sciences.
