Dátum:2025
Megjegyzések:The impact of student employment on academic and labour market outcomes has been at the forefront of international research. The novelty of this study is that we explore the literature and empirical data to address the individual motivations for student employment, and the determinants of these motivations. Based on theoretical insights, we formulate our hypotheses about the ranking and types of motivations and the impact of students' socio-demographic background and academic characteristics on motivations. We perform cluster analysis using the six primary motivations and examine the factors behind the chance of belonging to each cluster through multinomial regression. Our empirical analysis is based on a survey (N = 2,199) conducted in 2019 in five countries of Central and Eastern Europe. According to our main finding, certain working students are not motivated to gain work experience and seek employment which is not related to their studies: they are younger than their peers, have a looser relationship with parents and external friends, and are more likely to be enrolled in a state-funded programme. For universities to enhance their students' employability, it would be necessary to offer job opportunities, which grant both sufficient remuneration and useful professional experience through departments or career offices.

Cím:Wings or Handcuffs? The Dilemmas of Helicopter Parenting Based on a Systematic Literature Review / Zsófia Kocsis, Dorka Kas, Gabriella Pusztai
Dátum:2025
ISSN:2076-0760
Megjegyzések:Modern parenting styles cover a wide spectrum, from strict tiger parenting to supportive lighthouse parenting. Among these, helicopter parenting remains particularly controversial: while some consider it a protective approach, others believe that excessive control can hinder the development of a child's autonomy and independence. Our research is significant because it approaches the topic from a rarely examined pedagogical perspective, thereby contributing to the psychology-dominated literature. We conducted our analysis using the EBSCO Discovery Service search engine and followed the steps of the PRISMA protocol. The aim of the study is to explore the relationship between helicopter parenting and academic achievement, as well as to review the factors-such as career-related decisions and adaptation-that may play a mediating role in this relationship. It reviews 33 studies published between 2012 and 2024, most of which use quantitative methods. Most of these studies were conducted in the United States and focus primarily on the college-age demographic. Our findings show that recognising and addressing helicopter parenting behaviours is essential to supporting student success. Furthermore, educational institutions should more actively make use of the potential resources and opportunities offered by such parenting behaviours. Overall, our findings confirm that helicopter parenting remains an under-researched topic at both the national and European levels, particularly in the context of education and public education systems, where further research is clearly needed.

Cím:Designing a Board Game to Expand Knowledge About Parental Involvement in Teacher Education / Kocsis, Zsófia; Csák, Zsolt; Bodnár, Dániel; Pusztai, Gabriella
Dátum:2025
ISSN:2227-7102
Megjegyzések:Research highlights a growing demand for active, experiential learning methods in higher education, especially in teacher education. While the benefits of parental involvement (PI) are well-documented, Hungary lacks tools to effectively prepare teacher trainees for fostering family?school cooperation. This study addresses this gap by introducing a custom-designed board game as an innovative teaching tool. The game simulates real-world challenges in PI through a cooperative, scenario-based framework. Exercises are grounded in international and national research, ensuring their relevance and evidence-based design. Tested with 110 students, the game's educational value was assessed via post-gameplay questionnaires. Participants emphasized the strengths of its cooperative structure, realistic scenarios, and integration of humor. Many reported gaining new insights into parental roles and strategies for effective home?school partnerships. Practical applications include integrating the game into teacher education curricula and adapting it for other educational contexts. This study demonstrates how board games can bridge theory and practice, offering an engaging, effective medium to prepare future teachers for the challenges of PI.

Cím:"Where soft skills are (not) developing?" : A study of graduates' skills and the role of university in preparing students for the labour market in Hungary / Kocsis, Zsófia ; Pusztai, Gabriella
Dátum:2024
ISSN:1838-3815
Megjegyzések:In the 21stcentury, the need to develop skills has gained significance. Most education systems equip graduates with the cognitive skills needed to enter the labour market. However, it is soft skills that enable young graduates to become potential employees. Hungarian higher education is characterised by a teacher-centred approach, which is less conducive to the development of soft skills. Our research investigates graduates' skills and the extent to which their skills are in alignment with the requirements of the workplace. The Fresh Graduate Survey 2020 database was used, while our interview survey provides nuances to the results of the secondary analysis. We also analyse how one Hungarian higher education institution has supported students' transition to the labour market. Data show that the competences considered important in the labour market are not always the same as the skills that graduates most oftenpossess. There is a considerable gap between expected and existing skills in the following areas: problem-solving, time management, practical expertise and conflict management. These skills are particularly important in the labour market, but graduates are less likely to have them. The results of the quantitative research are also nuanced by the interviews, which show that higher education provides a good foundation but does not sufficiently focus on the development of soft skills. The results of the qualitative research highlight a number of shortcomings in key areas, the development of which is important not only at the level of individuals but also in the long term in view of the prestige of university education.

Cím:"Won't be enough to invite parents to school events" : Results of a systematic literature review of parental volunteering / Kocsis Zsófia; Markos Valéria; Fazekas Elek; Fényes Hajnalka; Pusztai Gabriella
Dátum:2024
Megjegyzések:Investigating parental involvement has come to the focus of education studies in the past decade as research on family engagement has revealed its positive impact on children's academic achievement. Parental volunteering at school may be an essential form of parental involvement, there is no evidence-based knowledge of its impact, nor has a systematic review been published on the subjectyet. This paper reviews the literature on the relationship between parental volunteering and parental involvement through 29 studies published between 2004 and 2021. The studies apply a wide variety of research methodology and define parental volunteeringeither as an effective means of parental involvement or as an outcome of interventions and mentoring programmes. The results suggest that initiatives to involve parents become less common as educational level increases.

Cím:Learning/Earning: Characteristics of Student Work and Its Impact on Academic Careers at a Regional Hungarian University / Kocsis, Zsófia; Pusztai, Gabriella
Dátum:2024
ISSN:2227-7102
Megjegyzések:Research on the effect of student work on academic achievement has produced inconsistent results, and Hungarian domestic research on the subject is scarce. Our research aims to contribute to the discussion. We hypothesize that student work has a beneficial effect on students' academic achievement. The target group is the full-time, working students at the regional Hungarian university (n = 538). By clustering students based on three variables (motivation, alignment of work with studies, and working hours), we separated three distinct student groups: disadvantaged/income-oriented, ambitious, and utilitarian/leisure-oriented. Disadvantaged/income-oriented students work for financial reasons and work a large number of hours. Ambitious students work fewer hours, and they work to fulfil their professional aspirations. The utilitarian/leisure-oriented cluster is the only group whose members work because it is a useful way of spending leisure time as well as an opportunity to obtain money for other free-time activities. With the help of the achievement index, we detected further differences between the student clusters. Students in the disadvantaged/income-oriented cluster do not have high academic scores and do not take part in extracurricular activities. They are more likely to interrupt their studies, mainly for financial reasons and because of work. The achievement was not affected by students' social status indicators such as parents' educational attainment or labor market position; it is contact with faculty and performing work related to studies that have the most explanatory power.

Cím:The Role of Higher Education Through the Eyes of Hungarian Undergraduate Students and Graduates: A Qualitative Exploratory Study / Kocsis Zsófia, Pusztai Gabriella
Dátum:2025
Megjegyzések:Context: Most education systems equip graduates with the professional knowledge and cognitive skills needed to enter the world of work. However, there are other competencies also important for young graduates to become successful employees. Due to the growing uncertainty that characterizes the labour market, the demand for non-cognitive skills (communication, collaboration, critical thinking etc.) that support employee development potential and better integration has increased significantly. However, higher education institutions often transmit a culture that is different from that of workplaces. The aim of our study is to explore the role of the examined higher education institution in preparing students for the labour market. Our long-term goal is to support institutional development on the basis of this data. Methods: To answer these questions, semi-structured inteviews were conducted. Qualitative research methods were preferred, which offer the possibility of uncovering hidden mechanisms. The selection criterion for participants (n=18) was that they had obtained their diploma within the last three years, while, for the other portion of the interviewees, a selection criterion was that they were full-time students. The participants are students of the same rural higher education institution. To ensure the validity and reliability of the research results, personal triangulation was validated using the intercoding technique, which is suitable for a priori coding. Results: The results confirmed that higher education institutions provide a good foundation for entering to the labour market, but the development of broad competencies is less advanced. Frequent reference was made to the dominance of theory at the expense of practical orientation. Additionally, participants emphasized that they did not see relevance of the course material and its future applicability to the labour market, and, in some cases, they mentioned problems relating to the attitudes of instructors and the quality of the training provided for the students. A portion of the undergraduate students who work (in addition to being in school) believe that they acquired the most important skills during student employment and not during their higher education studies. Conclusions: One of the challenges for higher education is to prepare students to meet employers' needs by developing students' competencies. During their years in higher education, students should be equipped with a set of competencies that will ensure their integration into the labour market. Our current research contributes to this goal by mapping the competencies, and highlighting where there is room for improvement which can contribute to graduates' success at work.
