This study examines the impact of individual differences in social value orientation(SVO) and external incentives on a social dilemma contribution. In this vignettestudy participants had to decide whether they are intent on executing an instance of proenvironmentalbehavior (i.e., separate and dispose waste) instead of keeping an appointment.The level of external incentives (i.e., the perceived criticality of contributions,the identifiability of the actor, and the distance of waste separation bins) were experimentallymanipulated in the scenario. The results demonstrated the interaction effect betweenexternal incentives and SVO: compared to prosocials, proself people were moresensitive to the instrumental aspects of the decision problem. Theoretical and practicalimplications of the results are discussed.
