Harmonic components areinjected back into the system and the resulting voltage dropsacross the source impedance creates voltage distortion in thepower system. The most significant harmonic sources in ourhomes are the switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) used inPCs, TV sets and any other electronic appliances. One goalof this paper is to present a way to measure total harmonicdistortion of voltage and current (THDu, THDi) and thepower factor (PF) of a load, at the wall socket. Another goalof this paper is to present some experimental resultsregarding PF and THDi of some very common loads on lowvoltage a.c. lines i.e. the power supply of computers,monitors and TV sets. The causes of some unexpected valuesare investigated and some physically meaningfulexplanations are given. The impact of the output currentvalue on PF is emphasized thus proving that one single PFvalue cannot fully qualify a SMPS.
