Megjegyzések:The author has studied the life cycle of Nymphalis polychloros in the past 20 years. This butterfly is protected in Hungary but not enlisted in the Hungarian Red Book and recommended to be surveyed by the National Biomonitoring Programme. During the early 20th century, this butterfly is a pontomediterranean-iranian-turkestanian faunal element which was historically widespread in Europe. Nowadays this is a protected species in western Europe where it is critically endangered in a number of areas. Besides a major plum tree pest, the attention of researchers were also attracted by the results of intensive plant protection that resulted in a significant population decrease by large losses of individuals in pupal stage. Analysing its life cycle, it has become clear that its populations can only be maintained by providing suitable sites for aestivation and hibernation. During hibernation the species is highly vulnerable resulting in rapid population declines. Besides it is important to use forestry methodologies in saving old trees as well as willows (Salix sp) and poplars (Populus sp) in woodland edges. It would be also important to apply organic farming in orchards connected to woodlands. This is especially important for pear (Pyrus sp) and cherry (Cerasus sp) trees, as primary food plants of the caterpillars. As caterpillars are highly mobile, genetic material is frequently exchanged in the population facilating the occurence of the butterfly in former habitats from which it has already disappeared.
