Megjegyzések:In Europe, bothMaculinea alconandM. teleiusfrequently co-occur inhabiting humid meadows. Althoughtheir parasitic life cycle is similar, ecological differenceshave been demonstrated between them: (i) spatial distri-bution of their eggs is different, and (ii)M. alconis acuckoo species, whileM. teleiusis predatory. The aim ofthe present study is to identify the genetic consequences ofthe ecological differences between these two butterflyspecies. To do so, we studied the genetic structure insamples from 9M. alconand 16M. teleiussites obtainedfrom the Carpathian Basin using 16 polymorphic enzymemarkers. Both species exhibited relatively low enzymepolymorphism compared to other lycaenid species. Nev-ertheless, all measures of variation were significantlyhigher inM. teleiusthan inM. alcon. Genetic differen-tiation, however, was generally higher amongM. alconpopulations as compared toM. teleius. Moreover, the re-sults of Bayesian clustering indicated a clear regionalpattern with three well-defined cluster regions inM. alcon. In contrast, the regional pattern was less evident inM.teleiuswhere we found three comparatively less distinctcluster regions. Putatively adaptive genetic differenceswere detected among cluster regions exploiting differenthost ants inM. alcon, while they were less evident inM.teleius. These results conform to our predictions on thedifferences between the utilization of their host ants. Sincethe pattern of genetic differentiation is different in the twoMaculineaspecies, conservation strategies need also todiffer in their cases.
