By the present days significant differences have occurred in the socio-economic processes of the towns in the agglomeration of Miskolc. Onga, which is the youngest town in the agglomeration of Miskolc, is in a special situation. The preconditions of the present dual morphology can be found in the rapid changes of the past half-century, as a result both the former agglomeration and the suburbanization process of the past few decades can be detected. The role of Miskolc in the growth and socio-economic development of Onga has been dominant in the past decades. In the examined period Onga profits from the opportunities given by the agglomeration of Miskolc because of the beneficial geographical situation, well-developed transport opportunities and short distance from Miskolc. During the years of socialism the class- and layer structure of Onga's society was simplified, its population seemed to be rather homogenous. In the beginning of 1990s the suburbanization process divided the seemingly homogenous population in terms of territory, quantity and quality as well. After the 1990s social diversity was determined by the division of labor in the different levels and lifestyle of its population. Social diversity was influenced by general income, circumstances of living (such as differences in housing and its equipment, in ownership of lasting products and goods, in cultural standard, needs and complacency). All these factors and the system changes starting after 1989 together resulted in the formation of a strongly layered and regionally segregated society in Onga. I have carried out a representative questionnaire survey (140 questionnaires) on Onga's socio-geography in order to explore local residents' differentiated relationship to seven basic social-geographic functions. The sample altogether comprised 100 female (71,5%) and 40 male (28,5%) respondents. Onga's social stratification and social gaps, i.e. differences among different socio-geographic groups, are not only due to sex differences, but also to age, education, unemployment and employment, ethnic segregation (the share of roma people is 17%) and also the date of moving in the settlement. In the course of Onga's social investigation both the former agglomerative tendencies and the suburbanization of the past few decades can be detected, which has resulted in a significant spatial segregation, whose borders are marked by the Bársonyos Creek and the railway line.
