Megjegyzések:A piranha-like fish was caught in a quarry pond in north-eastern Hungary in 2016. According to the appearance and the teeth of the fish, it belongs to the group of pacus. Since three pacu species Piaractus brachypomus, P. mesopotamicus and Colossoma macropomum are common in the aquarium fish trade, characteristics of presently studied specimen were compared with the relevant literature data of these species. The comparison of morphometric and meristic characteristics showed the most similarity with the species Piaractus brachypomus. Only the number of lateral line scales was in the interval of P. mesopotamicus, but according to the number of scales above lateral line, this specimen cannot belong to the species P. mesopotamicus. Higher number of lateral line scales was specific to fishes which were caught in Slovakia and Croatia also, that revealed that the imported Middle European stocks of Piaractus brachypomus probably genetically distinguished from the native populations.
