Megjegyzések:The non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and steatohepatitis (NASH) are the most prevalent liver diseases in the developed countries. NAFLD is considered as the metabolic syndrome of the liver, since it characterized by obesity, hyperlipidaemia, insulin resistance, moreover several extrahepatic manifestations can also be identified. Cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney diseases are the most frequent ones. Recently, more and more data have been published, that other diseases, like osteoporosis, can accompany NAFLD. Important epidemiological data support, that osteoporosis may appear either in children and adolescent, in adults or in postmenopausal women, as well. Several pathophysiological factors can be considered. On the one hand, cytokines, produced in the inflamed fatty liver may influence bone metabolism, like tumour necrosis factor-?, osteocalcin, osteopontin. On the other hand, significant vitamin D deficiency was observed and also reduced physical activity can play an important role in the mechanism of osteoporosis in NAFLD. However, vitamin D deficiency may not only be the consequence of NAFLD but it may play a role in the development and progression of NAFLD, which would result then in a vicious circle. The increased physical activity significantly improves the bone metabolism, and reduces the level of liver enzymes, hepatic steatosis as well as inflammation. General vitamin D supplementation in NAFLD still needs further investigations. However, in case of proven osteoporosis, the indication is clearly established, independently from NAFLD.
