Megjegyzések:	The paper deals with a complex topic of social ethnography, namely, family and household. Ethnographic researches on extended family, organisation of family, gender roles, birth, marriage and the upbringing of children started in the 1930s and went on after the Second World War. In the framework of these researches recollections of interviewees were regarded as contemporary data providing access to a homogeneous peasant world and customs. This paper relies on these ethnographic fieldworks, but considers the published interviews as texts or narratives that promote the understanding of the linguistically formed experiences, the operation of individual and collective memory and the rural discourses on family life. In the area of Mátraalja (northern Hungary) women in the 1950s recollected authoritarian power relations within the family as well as the rites and symbols of subordination, which refers to the power of Catholic?Christian tradition. Other people reconstructed events of family life along the once prevailing status hierarchy or recalled the reproduction of status, e. g. the moral command for a good, i.e. profitable marriage of offsprings, which can also be an expression of enduring experiences and cultural particularity. Also, such narratives were frequently told in which symbols, folkloric texts and personal experience narratives, motifs, plots and characters emerged as figures of collective memory contributing to the survival of communities of memory.
