Traces of a Settlement from the Late Sarmatian-Period Discovered in ?agu ? Site A1_1", Arad County he present study is based of the author's MA thesis defended in 2013 updated with new data revealed by certain recent researches. he paper envisages the issues related to the settlement system and the material culture of the settlements during the Sarmatian Era in the Lower Mure₀s Valley. In the present case I have chosen part of a settlement from site ₀Sagu A1_1, located on the third terrace of River Mure₀s, east of the settlement of ₀Sagu (Arad County). he site has been identiied and researched during the construction of the Arad-Timi₀soara highway sector, part of the IV pan-European corridor. he discovered archaeological material, apparently modest but very interesting and the relations indicated by it have determined me to publish it as a case-study here. Regarding the settlement system, on this site one can distinguish between two groups of complexes, one in the southern part and the other in the northern part. In the southern side the settlement consists of one pit-house, rectangular in ground plan, with a gable roof, storage or household refuse pits, and a water well, while in the northern part it consists of two household refuse pits and a ditch that forms a rectangular precinct the function of which can be interpreted as an animal pen. On the basis of the pottery material, typical shapes that can be included into the late period of the Sarmatian Era are missing, so that one cannot abandon the idea that it belongs to an earlier habitation horizon. I also believe this due to the considerable distance (ca. 100 m) between the two groups. Specialized literature mentions farm-type settlements that can be dated to the late period but in this case the identiication of part of the settlement with this model is unsupported due to the small quantity of adobe from the illing of the pits, indicating the existence of ground dwellings. I was thus able to estimate that the settlement system seems to have been a denser one. he great majority of the discovered archaeological material consists of pottery modeled on the fast-turning potters' wheel, on the slow-turning wheel and by hand, but also by a considerable quantity of lithic material. Pottery modeled on the fast-turning wheel forms the bulk of the discoveries, representing 84%, and this its the archaeological picture of the Late Sarmatian Period. On the basis of a special jug fragment with an element applied to the handle, one can suspect a direct relation with the territory between rivers Mure₀s, Tisa, and Cri?. In the Carpathian Basin one can enumerate only two analogies for this type of jug with an element applied to the handle, in Apátfalva and Endrőd (Hungary). On the basis of Andrea Vaday's observations, this ceramic type seems to have Oriental archetypes in the area north of the Black Sea. hrough the processing of the archaeological material, based on the analogies provided by the pottery modeled on the slow-turning potters' wheel, that only represents 10% ? characteristic to the late period of the Sarmatian Era ? and on the special fragment of jug with an element applied to the handle, the part of settlement in ₀Sagu can be dated to approximately the end of the fourth century and the irst half of the ifth century, contemporary to the settlements in Orosháza-Szénási út and END0170 (Endrőd, Hungary).
