Megjegyzések:Nuclear medicine applies unsealed radioactive preparations for medical purposes. For imaging, a trace amount of a radiopharmaceutical is administered to the patient. Through the detection of the emitted electromagnetic radiation, we obtain maps of distribution of pharmaceuticals, which reflect the function of organs. The most important device is the gamma camera, which can detect both gamma- and characteristic X-rays emitted as a part or consequence of nuclear transformations. In a static study, we obtain one image or a few images of the equilibrium distribution of the radiopharmaceutical. A dynamic study registers different phases of the changing distribution. Tomographic (slice) images may be obtained not only by using gamma emitters (SPECT: single photon emission computed tomography), but also by detecting the annihilation radiation of positron emitters with a positron emission tomograph (PET). Hybrid devices combine emission tomography with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging (PET-CT, SPECT-CT, PET-MR). For radionuclide therapy, mainly beta emitters are used, as they deposit radiation energy specifically in the tissue where the radiopharmaceutical accumulates, due to the short range.
