This monograph reports studies on the assemblages of ground- and vegetation-dwelling spiders in habitats affected by anthropogenic activities. Spiders are especially species-rich taxa, adapted to various habitats, and environmental conditions. They are predators; thus, they are vitally important in ecosystem services, controlling insect populations. Spiders are favourable taxa for ecological studies, because they are diverse and abundant, and their ecology are known. Moreover, spiders adjust rapidly to changes in abiotic and biotic environmental factors, including human disturbances like air pollution, urbanization, habitat fragmentation, and grazing. Thus, they are especially useful indicator taxa to assess human influence on biotic communities. There are 3 studies in the first part of the monograph. The effect of immission load and the urbanization on spider assemblages are studied. These studies revealed that urbanization and immission load decreased species richness and diversity of spider assemblages as the intensity of disturbance and the amount of pollutants increased from the less disturbed habitats towards the strongly disturbed ones. In the first study it was demonstrated that immission load not influenced significantly the spiders living on or under tree`s bark, while foliage-dwellers were sensitive to immission. In the urbanization studies it was pointed out that overall species richness was not a suitable indicator of human disturbance; therefore, species with various ecological demands should be analyzed separately. Ignoring ecological demands of the species masked the real effects of urbanization. Also, there are 3 studies in the second part of the monograph. The effect of local and landscape-level factors on spider assemblages of managed (grazed) and unmanaged sandy grassland fragments in Kiskunság and Nyírség region were studied. It was demonstrated that grazing intensity (as local factor) was the most important factor influencing vegetation-dwelling spiders, while both local and landscape-level factors were important drivers in shaping ground-dwelling spiders. It was also pointed out that in stable, unmanaged grasslands local factors were more important than landscape-level factors in shaping ground-dwelling spider assemblages.
