Megjegyzések:	The study sheds new light on some old assumptions about the socio-cultural implicanons of Orthodox vs. "Neologue" (roughly, Reprm) Judaism pr Hungar- ian Jewry in the /ast decades of the past century.Examiningthe data available on the Orthodox merchams operating in the Hungarian capital with special re'prence to their places of origin, the author seeks answers to the jJ/Jowing questions: Was an Orthodox Jewish merchant reaJly un/ikely to be vennaesome in his choice of residence and 1i,P style? Was he reaJly tess likely to assimilase and promote econome TTKXiernkatiotnhan a Neologue member of the business community? Is it legitimate to identiJl Orthodoxy's reverence pr tradition with isolation lom the host society, and a disinclination to adopt modern ways? The fino?ings presented here show that the majority of the Orthodox group under consideration were in-migrams to Budapest, whose stopovers at various locations between their places of origin and the capital corresponded to various stages of adapiasion to a modern urban setting. Their presence in the bustling, modernizing metropolis was, in an overwhelming number of cases; the result of a deliberase choice, and cannot, thus, be considered an anomaly.
