In this paper we would like to present three letters as sources. Two of them were written by József Suták, a Piarist priest and mathematics professor. The third is from Aurél Török, professor of medicine, rector of the Budapest University. The letters are about trying to win Gyula Vályi over to the University of Budapest. The aim of our writing is to demonstrate that in 1898 Gyula Vályi was considered one of Hungary`s most eminent mathematics professors of the time.
