Megjegyzések:The word balek 'victim to be robbed; gullible, exploitable person' is one of the oldest words of Hungarian thieves' cant known and since the second half of the 19th century it has also become widespread in colloquial language. The origin of the word balek is unknown. The most recent Hungarian etymological dictionary derives it exclusively from Ottoman Turkish (possibly with Bulgarian mediation), however, we cannot disregard the German or Czech etymology either that has not been discussed in scholarly publications so far. This paper provides an overview of our current knowledge of the word balek in Hungarian linguistics, highlights gaps in research, and also provides new explanations and data.
