Megjegyzések:	Nurse sows play a critical role in the pig industry responsible for nursing piglets from multiple litters. Their use is a promising management strategy aimed at optimizing pre-weaning survival. Management protocols in pig production have their own fair of challenges. This study sought to understand challenges that small scale pig farmers in Kenya face in implementing the nurse sow strategy. A survey was conducted during July 2023 among pig farmers who visited the annual Nakuru National Agricultural show where they were able to willfully respond to questions in an interview. Results indicate that ,of the total n= 139 interviewed pig farmers, major challenges in adoption of the strategy was hugely depicted as a feed challenge at n= 108 (78 %) owing to the fact that a nurse sow has to stay more in lactation consuming much feed resources unlike the non nurse sows. Market issue was a second challenge at n=83 (59%) as it was unfavorable to keep nurse sows under the current prevailing market conditions where pig prices and pork products were dissatisfying in relation to the input costs made. Since the use of nurse sows favours highly prolific sows, farmers expressed low litter sizes orchestrated by low prolific pig breeds as a limiting factor. As this information is unique to Kenyan pig farmers, the findings are valuable since they represent the typical manifestation of small scale pig production which accounts for over 80% of pig farming. The research results adds into a pull of knowledge which Kenyan stakeholders can use for policy changes to adopt maximally to the changing dynamics in pig production for increased productivity.
