Cím:To Be Tailor-Made : The prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder among aesthetic surgical patients / Szászi Beáta, Szabó Pál
Dátum:2010
Megjegyzések:There is an increasing motivation to maintain youth and health by means of various aesthetic interventions such as diets, extreme exercise or plastic surgical operations. More attention should be paid on body image distortions among cosmetic surgical patients (Sarwer, 2003). The prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is higher (3-18,7%) among plastic surgical patients (Veale, 2006) than in the general population (Koran, 2008). This disorder (APA, 2000) seems to be relatively common and associated with high rates of comorbidity (Phillips, 2005). Aims: To assess the prevalence of BDD among aesthetic plastic surgical patients and to analyze the psychological impact of these operations. Methods: The questionnaire completed after the operations included the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ; Goldberg, 1978), the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Questionnaire (BDDQ; Phillips, 1996), the Body Satisfaction Questionnaire (Folk at al., 1993), the Body Investment Scale (BIS; Orbach and Mikulincer, 1998), and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT; Garner and Garfinkel, 1979). Results: The patient group (n = 64) scored higher on the first scale of EAT (p = 0.02); they had more negative thoughts about their body (BIS, 1st scale, p = 0.03), less preference of body contact (BIS 2sd scale, p = 0.02), and better health state (GHQ scores, p < 0.01) in comparison with the control group (n = 71). Seven percent of the women in the operated group have BDD. Conclusions: Plastic surgeons should screen their patients more strictly regarding psychiatric disorders, and more longitudinal research is needed to assess the psychological effects of aesthetic operations.
