Megjegyzések:Due to their FDI-based economic development policies, Central and Eastern Europe countries have been firmly integrated into different cross-border production networks during the last few decades. As a part of the global semi-periphery, the region primarily produces industrial commodities to the European market based on its relative cost-efficiency and geographical and institutional proximity. This position seems to be unbroken, despite the fact that the global socio-economic and institutional conditions have changed significantly. Beyond the long-term processes, shock effects of the COVID pandemic and the Eastern European war shape the structural and spatial character of foreign trade. Using the International Trade Centre database, the paper focuses on the comparative analysis of the Hungarian and Romanian foreign trade in the last two decades, with particular attention to the European roles and embeddedness of the countries. As results of the paper, foreign trade growth only interrupted by the economic crisis and the COVID pandemic, and the increasing similarities between the countries in terms of commodity and regional structures of foreign trade have to be underlined. Products of machinery and engineering and European relations play the predominant role in both cases. The long-term changes in foreign trade refer to the intersectoral and relational upgrading tendencies.
