Megjegyzések:This paper offers an outline of some aspects of the ellipsis-a complex textual, syntactic and rhetorical phenomenon-focusing on Latin and attempting to shed light upon the influence exerted by the surface structure of sentences in the mentioned language over its users' choice among the constituents to be ellipted. The author aims to account for certain bits of information of linguistic nature that might be obtained analysing grammatically incomplete sentences in accordance with the generative framework. The examples are selected from M. Tullius Cicero's First Speech against L. Sergius Catilina-a masterpiece that has been considered a prototype of the well formed text over the past two millennia.
