Megjegyzések:Numerous oxbows of different sizes, depths and ages accompany alluvial rivers in theCarpathian basin. These water bodies provide varioushabitats for macroscopic and microscopic assemblages.Phytoplankton of 13 oxbows in the Tiszavalley was studied between 2005 and 2008. In thisarticle, we focussed on the following questions (i) dothe oxbows have unique microflora? (ii) does themacrophyte coverage have a large effect on thecomposition and biomass of the algal assemblages?and (iii) does the higher plants dominated state resultin clear-water conditions in the oxbows? The studiedoxbows were in different stages of the ageingprocess. We classified the sampled oxbows accordingto their macrophyte vegetation into five types. A totalof 646 species of algae were recorded in the oxbowsover the study period. The microflora was dominatedby cyanophytes, chlorococcalean green algae, euglenophytesand diatom species. Phytoplankton specieswere allocated into 32 coda. For the determination oftypical algal assemblages, we used Kohonen's SelfOrganizing Map (SOM) statistical analysis combinedwith K-means clustering, which has resulted fivedifferent types of phytoplankton associations. Thesetypes were dominated by coda Y, LO, W1, WS andJ. Chlorophyll a data of the sparsely and denselyvegetated oxbows did not differ, since a wide rangeof values characterised both types of the lakes. In thisstudy, the composition of the microflora is similar tothat of other eutrophic lakes, but some rarelyoccurring taxa such as Peridinium gatunense Nygaardand Peridiniopsis elpatiewskyi (Ostenf.) Bourellymight play a key role in the phytoplanktonsuccession of the oxbows. The effect of the macrophytecoverage was decisive in the composition ofthe algal assemblages, and our investigations indicatedthat, in the case of the oxbows, the macrophytedominatedstate does not necessarily result in a clearwaterstate.
