Megjegyzések:Motive of Jerusalem in Three Poems(Summary) Jerusalem, the ancient town has always had great importance in the Jewish-Christian culture. In the Old Testament it is the capital of the Promised Land, the centre of God's presence, the Holy Town. The New Testament also mentions it as a religious centre, and the place where Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself for humanity. On the other hand, Apostle Paul speaks about Jerusalem in another way: it is the separated and Celestial Town for the saved people. This town has existed before the Creation of the World and will exist to the End of Times. It will also be the place of the Last Judgement as it is in the Revelations of John. Jerusalem has been presented in literature too. This motive has been re-interpreted in many ways again and again. This study shows three interpretations (works of a Hungarian, a Russian and a Polish poet) from the beginning of the 20th century. József Kiss's work is a revival of old Jewish tradition, however, Mandelstam's poem gives a negative interpretation of Jerusalem and Jewish customs. The Holy Town is only a "pretext" to show the process of human cognition in Alicja Iwanska's work. All of these interpretations are good examples of the modern way of thinking about the World and man with his determined circumstances.
