Megjegyzések:The Hungarian Don Quixote and "Don Quixotism" in the novels of Kálmán Mikszáth (1847-1910). It is a generally accepted that the book 'Don Quixote de la Mancha' by Miguel de Cervantes started off as a parody of chivalric romance. It is considered to be the first modern novel which had an enormous influence of the development of world literature. Hungarian literature was no exception, and the Hungarian language also contains phrases, sayings and expressions derived from the novel, which are familiar even to those who have not read the work (e.g. tilting at windmills or fighting windmills ).The influence of Cervantes's work on the novels of Kálmán Mikszáth is evident and proven, especially in 'Beszterce ostroma' (1894) ('The Siege of Beszterce'), and 'Új Zrínyiász' ('New Zrinyiád'). The adaptation of the Don Quixote theme to Hungarian circumstances enabled Mikszáth to deal with one of the most important issues of contemporary Hungarian society, the problem of the dzsentri (gentry). The word itself is derived from English, but in the Hungarian context it means the impoverished nobility, who are - like Don Quixote - unwilling to adapt to changing times. Mikszáth describes two main types of the gentry: Count Pongrácz is the innocent, harmless character who lives in the past and adheres to his moral principles, and the socially destructive. He is ignorant of the passing of time and creates a medieval world in his castle in Nededza. Counts Behenczy, who have squandered their fortune. Unwilling to change their lifestyle, they spend their annuity within weeks and are saved from starvation by local peasants. Mikszáth's novel is a parody of Hungarian circumstances and Hungarian history. With his insane behaviour, Count Pongrácz escapes from the situation which can offer no sensible alternative.
