Megjegyzések:Background: By the end of this century the approximate number of cancer death will be roughly 10 million, however, in the following 15 years it is expected to increase to cca. 20 million in the world. Depending on the extension and localizaton of the tumour some malignant diseases can be definitely cured while others can be managed only by palliative measures. Materials, methods, results: The definition of the palliative therapy is as follows: not the disease itself but the symptoms should be treated. Palliative therapy is usually delivered during the last 3-6 months at palliative care units. These special hospital units together with the home care and hospice models can provide facilities for holistic treatment. Terminal treatment includes painkilling, nutrition, and administration of antiemetics. The assessment of the benefits of palliative therapy is rather complicated but professional palliation can be accomplished only at special care units. Conclusion: The different forms of palliative treatment may enhance the quality of life of cancer patients in terminal stage. If active treatment modalities are not available any longer the quality of life should be preferred to survival.
