Taxes on labour earnings are a very important determinant in decision of companies' hiring andindividuals' incentives to legal work. The study explores the impact of taxes on workers' income byeducational level and age group in Hungary, between 1999 and 2008. We employ two commonly usedindicators: the average tax rates and the tax wedges. In Hungary, the total tax burden on labour incomeexpressed as a percentage of labour cost is very high in comparison to the European countries. The majorpart of the high tax burden is attributable to high employees' tax liabilities and employers' social securitycontribution.
