Cím:When does compensation lead to forgiving? : an experimental study about how the agent and extent of compensation influences forgiving / Gábor Papp, Judit Kovács, József Pántya
Dátum:2013
Megjegyzések:Interpersonal rejection is an offense with possibly serious consequencescausing strong negative emotions. Forgiving can help in getting rid of these unpleasantemotions, and compensation following a transgression could promote forgiving. In ourexperimental study we examined the effects of compensation on forgiving after a rejection, depending on the extent of compensation ('no' - 'one-component' - 'two-component'),and the agent (the institution or the transgressor) who made the decision about it.The contribution of our study is that it examines the effects of compensation even whenthe compensation decision is negative. The sample consisted of 117 participants. The resultsshowed that compensation promoted forgiving, but compensating to a larger extentdid not yield more forgiving than compensating marginally. Furthermore, the compensationordered institutionally facilitated forgiving more than the compensation ordered bythe transgressor. This effect was especially typical of men's feelings and behavior. Practicalimplications of the results are also discussed.
