Megjegyzések:We carried out our research entitled ♭Adult Autonomous Learning and theProcess of Commitment to Improving Mastery of a Subject' supported by the HungarianScientific Research Fund (ID number: K63555). In this we defined autonomous learningas a learning initiated by the learners themselves, when they complete an independent, directed learning program, attempt to obtain information on things that they are unableto remember well, check their existing knowledge, refresh the previously acquired knowledgeon their own free will. This autonomous learning can be connected to the activitiesof adult work or learning as well as to their hobbies and any daily issues whether it isorganizing a trip or orientation in political life.In our research the survey of these learning methods and contents has been carried outwith the help of the analysis of the related literature and by questionnaires and theclassical ways of interviews. We examined 1,200 people's experience related to selfdirectedlearning (between the ages of 18 and 64) by the questionnaire on a webpageand by interviewers as well. In the questionnaire 16 main areas of autonomous learningwere investigated, such as information technology, religion, foreign languages, history, politics, etc. These activities are linked with the observation of the characteristics oflearners, e. g. education, age, previous learning experiences etc. Besides the questionnairesurvey we carried out structured interviews with adult learners of different agesand educations in four regional centres (Budapest, Debrecen, Pécs and Eger), whichserved as an exploration of the learning motivations and the process of commitment toimproving mastery of a subject through cases of independent learning. In my paper, an answer is sought to the question of how autonomous learning of thelearners contributes to their life and to improvement of their quality of life. We assumethat the knowledge, skills and competencies acquired in the above mentioned way complement learning and knowledge acquisition within and outside school and the wideningof competencies. Naturally, one cannot replace the other and it is also inquestion whether the knowledge gained through autonomous learning may and must bechannelled into the certificates of formal trainings. Yet we consider it important that onemust be aware of the fact that his or her learning is lifelong even if it is not officialformal, but carried out independently.
