Megjegyzések:In 2009 maize and sorghum was studied in a weighablelysimeter experiment in order to determine the water useeffi ciency of these two plants as farmers often have thedilemma if maize can be substituted by sorghum evenwith benefi t (e.g. better water use effi ciency) under thesoil- and climatic conditions of the Great HungarianPlain. This question is arisen even with a greater emphasisunder irrigated conditions, especially as the safetyof plant production can be ensured only by irrigation indroughty periods. One maize and one sorghum hybridin three replications were applied as indicator crops forthe comparison. In 2010 three different sorghum hybridswere studied under irrigated and non-irrigated conditions.For both years water balances for different time frameswere calculated involving the determination of eachcomponent of them. On the base of the different yieldandwater balance parameters indexes characterising thewater use effi ciency of the crops were also calculated. Itcould be concluded that in a normal, dry year sorghumconsumed 10 percent more water than maize under irrigatedconditions. In the wet year somewhat lower evapotranspiration,but very much better water use effi ciencycharacterized the 3 investigated sorghum hybrids.
