Megjegyzések:The visual mismatch negativity (vMMN) event- related potential (ERP) is a counterpart of the auditory mismatch negativity. VMMN is elicited by violation of sequential regularity established by environmental stimulation. In the present study we investigated the sensitivity of vMMN to the violation of meaningful category: the human gender faces. The ERPs were recorded to emotionally neutral cropped female and male faces with 300 ms stimulus duration. The stimuli were delivered in passive oddball paradigm (the vMMN-related stimuli were independent of the visual detection task). In Experiment 1 the stimuli were presented with 400 ms inter-stimulus-interval (ISI) and in Experiment 2 with 2250 ms ISI. There was no repetition along the experimental blocks regarding the physical appearance of the stimuli. In both experiments the electrophysiological data showed that, the infrequent faces elicited a parieto-occipital negativity with 350 ms peak latency, relative to the frequent faces. These components are considered as a genuine vMMN that is generated by automatic detection of gender category change. Additionally, the N1/N170 face- related component was sensitive to ISI effect i.e. using longer ISI, the face stimuli elicited pronounced N1/N170 component. In conclusion, the present result showed that the gender face category can be represented without the involvement of the attentional processes.
