Megjegyzések:Competition from native species is a key mechanismfor biotic resistance to invasion. Accelerated germinationto pre-empt resources or delayed germination andinduced dormancy until the next growing season aretwo alternative strategies for annual invasive plants toavoid the drawbacks of competition at the seed stage. In Ambrosia artemisiifolia, both of these tactics couldtheoretically increase its long-term fitness. However, their relative importance has never been tested. Westudied the germination pattern of A. artemisiifoliaseeds in various competitive environments by experimentallymodifying the life stage (seed, seedling, adult), density (low, high) and also the identity (intraspecificand 3 interspecific competitors) of neighbours in controlled conditions. When facing competition ofseeds and seedlings at high densities or of particularidentity, A. artemisiifolia accelerated its germination. In contrast, A. artemisiifolia followed a competitionavoidance strategy in the presence of established adultheterospecific neighbours by delaying germination andreducing the germination fraction through induction ofsecondary dormancy. By testing the seedlings' performancein the same competition situations as those ofseeds, we showed that the germination responses werebeneficial in the case of heterospecific, but not ofconspecific neighbours.
