Megjegyzések:Purpose - The main question of the case study is that how the sign of EU "Think Small First" predominates in Hungary. Therefore, the one of the main purpose of this case study is to examine and introduce the composition of the Hungarian enterprise sector and show the SME-sector national economy weight and role. The other main purpose is to review and summarize the enterprise competitiveness results in the international and Hungarian researches. The final aim is to examine the SME-s business performance and competition through the indexes gathered from their financial reports. The purpose is to reveal that not just the capital shortfall and the size of the enterprise can influence the competition, but the geographical location also affects the business performance and competitiveness.Design/methodology/approach ? Data processing and analysis of the SPSS computer data processing program, and Excel spreadsheet program was used. The study was carried out multivariate statistical methods, which factor into the reduction of the variables and their cluster grouping enabling applied.Findings ? The analysis of the Hungarian and international research findings shows that SME-sector ratio is about 99% worldwide, this value is higher in the former socialist countries. In Hungary, the 99.9 percentage SME share is particularly high; more attention should be paid on their operations. The factors which influence the competitiveness of the SME-sector are examined by questionnaires. This case study examines their business performance through internationally agreed indicators, which is new compared to the previous investigations. The case study connects the researches which were calculated by internationally agreed indicators and statistical methods; and presents that competitiveness can be measured using this method. It is an innovative approach to measure through the indexes gathered from financial reports which can be seen at the same time as competitiveness factors. The result of the case study shows the creation of two main clusters. There are only three enterprises in one of the clusters, whose competitiveness is particularly good compared to the others. The majority of the enterprises are also relatively successful. However, there are enterprises that cannot perform well in view of profitability and solvency. These enterprises are operating in disadvantaged small regions. The key achievement of the research is that beyond the capital shortage and size problems the geographical location significantly affects the business performance and competitiveness of the enterprises.Research limitations/implications ? According to the result of the case study, competitiveness can be measured by the indexes of internationally agreed financial reports, if we examine that the enterprises used the available resources at the best way. The enterprises can be grouped with the help of cluster and factor analyses, and these groups can be examined individually, what factors affect their performance. Individual developing plans can be executed with the investigation results that were performed this way. It is useful for the researchers, because this method can be well used in different size of enterprises. It is beneficial also for the investors, because they can access to the enterprise database through the published financial reports. This case study presents what kind of examination can be fulfilled with public figures. It is useful also for the national economies when they create their economy politics. Although the research in this area has furthered our knowledge, the results provided an opportunity to further my studies continue the expansion of indicators to highlight industry affiliation or business relationship between the results of running the place.Practical implications - The present study is of interest for researchers and economic professionals who have examined the structure of firms in the former socialist countries.Originality/Value - The structure of the Hungarian companies presented and the importance of the SME sector, pointing out possible based on further analysis of the financial statements.
