Angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels from the preexistingvasculature, is a critical process in tumor development, and its inhibitionis now a well-established strategy for the treatment of cancer. Sulfatedcyclodextrin and maltohexaose derivatives exhibit anticancer activity,presumably through an anti-angiogenic mechanism. Recently, a fullysulfated maltotetraose glycoside displaying improved antitumor andantimetastatic activity was evaluated in a phase I clinical trial in cancerpatients.
