Cím:Post-bodies in Hungarian cinema: forgotten bodies and spaces in Ágnes Kocsis' Pál Adrienn / Ureczky Eszter
Dátum:2016
Megjegyzések:Ágnes Kocsis' second feature film, Pál Adrienn (Adrienn Pál, 2010),followed the highly successful Friss levegő (Fresh Air, 2006), and, similarto the previous work of the contemporary Hungarian director, focuses onthe life of a woman in her thirties who is vegetating on the periphery ofsociety.1 Piroska, a morbidly obese nurse, has worked on the terminal wardof a hospital for twenty years, and while descending to the underworld ofthe morgue on a daily basis, she fills the hollow of alienation in her lifeand body with compulsive eating. However, one day a new patient by thename of Adrienn Pál suddenly reminds her of her long-lost best childhoodfriend of the same name, and as a result, she decides to embark on a questto find her "own" Adrienn Pál. Thus the film can be approached as apsychological road movie and catatonic passion at the same time, representing the stages of Piroska's strange detective work within thecontext of her forgotten past and lost present. This journey eventuallyleads her to her own forgotten self buried under thick layers of fat.Interpreting the film along the lines of forgetting and its somatic andspatial metaphors, the minimalist visual language of the film reveals thesecrets of the silent bodies it depicts; Piroska's corpulent body and thewasted corpses of her patients both seem to signify a kind of non-presence.Moreover, these bodily and spatial metaphors of lack are embedded in the uncanny symbolic registers of a socialist-realist world and grotesquevisual, painterly parallels as well as opera and pop music pieces.Eventually, forgotten bodies and spaces are the metaphors of individualand cultural loss in Adrienn Pál, primarily characterized by the aestheticquality of the grotesque, and materializing around a central void signifiedby name of the bodiless title protagonist.
