Megjegyzések:Ant-plant interactions such as myrmecochory, i.e. mutualistic, ant mediated seed dispersal, are interesting in evolutionary biology, ecology and conservation. Many plant species are known to have developed nutrient-rich attachments to seeds (elaiosomes) in order to attract ants. This interaction is compulsory and essential for the plant, hence a better understanding of the details of this association is essential for successful conservation. We studied myrmecochorous seed dispersal in the rare and threatened plant species Sternbergia colchiciflora Waldst. & Kit., in which the presence of ant-attracting elaiosomes has long been known, however, no further details on ant-mediated seed dispersal is available. We studied myrmecochorous associations between S. colchiciflora and local ant species in 27 Hungarian and three Serbian localities during the fruiting season (April and May 2017). We found five ant species to exhibit seed removal behavior in seven Hungarian localities. Our paper provides the first data on the myrmecochorous seed dispersal of S. colchiciflora. Our data suggest that ant-mediated seed dispersal is not a species-specific interaction in S. colchiciflora. Two ant species, Lasius alienus on dolomite bedrock and L. bombycina on loess substrate, appeared to be ideal agents in seed dispersal, as both of them are dominant and abundant on the sites with certain bedrock properties, and seed maturity coincides with their larval biomass peak. Our study also suggests that other ant species can also disperse S. colchiciflora seeds, however, these interactions are less optimal, because their main larval biomass production precedes S. colchiciflora seed maturity, hence, their foraging activity declines by this time.
