Since the 1990s research has been conducted with the aim of identifying the role of foreign language strategies in increasing sales, furthermore finding the influence of foreign language competencies of an area on locational decisions. In respect of small and medium sized enterprises the organisations of the European Union initiated investigations to reveal how foreign language knowledge or the lack of it affects business performance.
