Megjegyzések:The Israelite confession was the only one among the accepted churches that was left without representation in the Upper House of Hungarian parliament after 1867. The paper seeks to answer the question what theoretical and practical considerations motivated the idea of providing the Israelite confession with representation in the Upper House during the reform of the Upper House in 1885 when it did not even belong to the accepted confessions yet. What role was played in the abortion of this proposal by the failure of religious emancipation, and by the institutional separation of religious trends? Moreover, what factors continued to prevent the establishment of political representation after 1895, and the adoption of the Israelite confession among the accepted religions? The analysis also explores the way in which the opinion of the progressive confessional press about prospective representation was shaped. The analysis is based on both parliamentary documents and the neologue Jewish press that was engaged with confessional matters.
