Megjegyzések:Pigs are less heat tolerant than other livestock species and are highly susceptible to heat stress (HS). HS is a physiological condition when an animal cannot release excess heat from its body caused by an increase in environmental temperature. Upon the pigs' exposure to such conditions its body performs several physiological and behavioral mechanisms to regulate its internal body temperature and maintain homeothermy. Pigs have a low thermolytic ability, which significantly affects the said mechanisms for self-regulation. This can lead to metabolic consequences that can dramatically jeopardize the animals' productive performance. HS compromises the pigs' post-absorptive metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and protein by altering the use of its body resources such as energy, fat and protein. Although these consequences are evident under high exposure to environmental temperature, there is still an avenue for pigs to acclimatize and it can be influenced by the duration of exposure to such condition. Our review gathered significant findings from several research pieces regarding the different periods of HS's effects on the pigs' metabolism. We discovered that several biochemical parameters and hormones that are essential for the pigs' metabolism have a varied response to the duration of the animals' exposure to HS. Pigs' blood glucose concentration spiked up upon acute exposure to HS. Still, prolonged exposure led to its reduction causing negative energy balance. It can force the animal to use its body's glycogen through glycogenolysis. Furthermore long-term HS exposure increased the levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides. Contrastingly, concentrations of high density lipoprotein cholesterol were decreased, leading to greater pig carcass fatness. An increase in cortisol level was also evident regardless of HS exposure duration, which affects insulin's function in facilitating protein synthesis in muscles. Thyroid hormones: Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4), however, had varied responses. The T3 highly decreased at 8 days of HS exposure. Still, it gradually increased over time (21days), while T4 had a constant decrease from 1st week to 3rd week of HS exposure. Therefore, pigs' metabolism is compromised regardless of the HS exposure duration and immediate intervention strategies should be applied to alleviate such adverse effects.
