Megjegyzések:The Source Value of the Founding Charter of the Pannonhalma Abbey for Historical Linguistics and Onomastics One of the ten charters dated for the age of Saint Stephen is the Founding Charter of the Pannonhalma Abbey. The question regarding the originality and authenticity of this linguistic record has served as the basis of disputes for centuries. The first part of the paper provides an overview of the rich research history ofthe charter, focusing on those key thematic points that are crucial regarding the source value of the linguistic record for historical linguistics and onomastics. As for the external attributes, we should highlight paleography and orthography, the monogram and the seal, while as for the contents, the dating, the varying use of the singular and the royal plural, aswell as the text of the colophon. Based on these along with numerous other points of analysis, as well as the numerous other elementsand features of the charter, scholars today clearly agree that the surviving copy of the founding charter of the Pannonhalma Abbey is notoriginal but as an authentic copy it may serve as a valuable source for historical linguistics and historical studies in general. In the second part of the paper, I analyze the toponyms of the charter using the method of toponym reconstruction. The founding charter includes about a dozen toponymic records with a varying level of source value and usability for historical linguistics and settlement history: some of them are included in the linguistic record only in Latin or Latinized form (Pannonhalma, Somogy, Piscatores), while others do not occur again in any other source besides the founding charter, thus their localization and etymology are almost impossible to complete, and at the same time their useas sources for historical linguistics and onomastics is also uncertain (Wisetcha, Murin, Curtov). Only half of the remnants have a certain localization and etymological explanation. It is an additional difficulty when it comes to using the linguistic record that there are still a lot of uncertainties in the specification of the age of the colophon thatincludes the majority of toponymic data. Still, the Founding Charter of Pannonhalma Abbey may serve as a useful guide in historical studies and its source value may be greatly strengthened if its study is complemented with the analysis of its later copies and the Pannonhalma Survey completed at the end of the 11th century.
