Megjegyzések:Haermonchus contortus is one of the most pathogenic nematode parasites of sheep. It feeds on the blood of the host animals and a severely infected animal could carry 3000-5000 adult worms, losing up to 250ml of blood every day. Yet, the diagnosis of nematode parasites still relies mainly on conventional microscopic examination of the parasitic eggs in the faeces of the animal. This parasite usually occurs as a mixed infection and the egg morphology is hard to differentiate from its closely related but less harmful species. Accurate differentiation and diagnosis of the parasite are crucial in reducing unwanted drug usage. Using a lectin (peanut agglutinin) that binds specifically to the egg of H. contortus which could be visualised by fluorescence microscopy. the infection of H. contortus can be established more accurately. This study presents the preliminary results of this technique to help in mapping a haemonchosis prevalence in Hungary.
