The Intricate Nature of Cross-Town Journeying in Rawi Hage's Cockroach / Molnár Judit

Megjegyzések:
My intention is to explore the unnamed protagonist's search in Rawi Hage's Cockroach for cultural acceptability in North America as he positions himself in a psychic trip in Montreal's underground world. The Montreal that is "infested with newcomers" is seen through the existential exploration of the immigrant's life as he tries to situate himself in liminal spaces, be they geographic, linguistic, cultural, religious or sexual. In the novel, the spaces under and above the ground support or defy each other in their own idiosyncratic ways, with hope, survival and an ambiguous kind of displacement existing side by side. I focus on how the story unfolds through different places and maneuvers in a cryptic space of displacement. The narrative shifts between multilayered cinematic scenes suggesting the existence of a metropolis (Montreal) that is transformed into an alien example of a topography filled with phantasmagorical elements. My aim is to disclose the novel's spatial and spacious dimensions, trusting that it can add to the understanding of the literary immigrant's imaginary text

Arctic Songs: A Journey Towards a New Tradition From Pre-Contact to Contemporary Inuit Poetry / Nándori Rita
Dátum:
2020
ISSN:
1213-7715 2336-4556
Megjegyzések:
Inuit poetry has an inherently concrete nature, whether evinced in song-poems collected in the oral tradition era, or in modern-day poetry written from the twentieth century onward. I propose, however, that the tangible observational poetry of the past has slowly been transforming into a new tradition. Novel ways of expression such as figurative language and philosophical thinking have been employed by contemporary Inuit poets. The transitions from literal to figurative language and from straight-for- ward to philosophical thinking are manifestations of the change in Inuit life and writing. Contemporary Inuit poetry is not abstract in the strictest sense of the word, but abstraction is there in the poems: in the metaphysical questions they pose, in their modern atmosphere and diction. This shift in artistic expression results in an emerging poetic tradition that is more accessible to a worldwide readership.

Minorities, Multiculturalism, and the Constitution / Gabriella T. Espák
Dátum:
2004
ISSN:
1213-7715
Megjegyzések:
If the Canadian Multiculturalism Act is not appropriate for Canada's social structure, why is it still the official policy for population management? This is the question the paper attempts to answer after contrasting the structure and content of the 1982 Constitution and Charter with that of the Multiculturalism Act to see how the aspect of social composition is reflected in them. I examine whether the ideological foundation of Trudeau's vision clashes with the modified views of the confederation proposed by the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords (1987, 1992). I propose that it is essential to differentiate between the phenomena of multinationality and polyethnicity in both the theory and the practice of multiculturalism.
