Cím:Discourse, power and resistance in sociographic documentaries of the late Kádár-era / Győri Zsolt
Dátum:2014
ISSN:2040-350X 2040-3518
Megjegyzések:The first part of the article introduces the communal identity crisis in Hungary and related social phenomena (including double social consciousness, socialist embourgeoisement, second society) characterizing the late Kádár-era. After addressing the internal paradoxes of the state socialist regime, I examine the attributes of discursive strategies and practices of social marginalization at work in the period. My line of inquiry engages with Michel Foucault's theories of power and resistance and investigates how his concepts and arguments can be adapted to the analysis of contemporary sociographic documentaries. The second part of the essay proposes a Foucauldian rereading of cine-sociographic methods in Gyula and János Gulyás' Don't Pale(1983) and Without Breaking the Law(1988), András Mész' Busted(1985) and György Dobray's two-part A Film About Prostitution (1988?1990). In these films I explore techniques of marginalization and victimization, and furthermore investigate strategies of identity-construction, mechanisms of domination and resistance on the social peripheries.

Cím:An Educational Corpus Based Exploration of Contemporary Hungarian Cinema: Lessons of the 2021 Hungarian University Film Awards / Győri Zsolt
Dátum:2022
ISSN:2040-350X 2040-3518
Megjegyzések:This paper explores the origins, pedagogical aims and framework of the Hungarian University Film Award (HUFA) incorporating the personal experience of its author who participated in the coordination of various stages of the initiative. It claims that the initiative created a unique learning environment?an educational corpus comprising of six films from 2019 competing for the awards?and describes the methods and conceptual angles used in class discussions. The first part of the article outlines the interpretive framework offered for students to better grasp the general aesthetic and generic patterns at work in the corpus, including the emergence of a medium concept film in Hungarian film culture. The second part introduces another framework that helped students to contextualize the corpus by organizing films into two groups based on festival appearances and international visibility. The final part of the paper focuses on interpretations proposed by students, the ways they used the analytical methods of integration and differentiation while addressing the HUFA-corpus. This includes reconstructing key arguments as to how in-class debates mapped up, compared, and criticised the manifold strategies films employ to raise awareness towards traumatic experience. The pedagogical benefits of the initiative were most apparent in this stage, where students were expected to consider both individual films and an overarching trauma-discourse.

Megjegyzések:The rise of the ecological point of view in Eastern European societies is undoubtedly one of the defining trends of the early 21st century, generating continuous changes in all fields of life, from agricultural production to consumption habits to contemporary visual culture. We are witnessing a gradual but large-scale cultural transformation, the understanding of which is a major challenge for contemporary academic research. In this paper, I will attempt to understand these changes in the field of film culture: I will examine to what extent the rise of the ecocritical approach is something new in Hungarian filmmaking, to what extent it draws on established film traditions, and in what respect it rewrites the established procedures and approaches of local filmmaking traditions. The starting point for my investigation is Ágnes Kocsis's film Eden (Éden 2020), which can be considered as the first eco-feature-film in Hungarian. A comparison of Eden with Kocsis's previous feature films highlights the cinematic effects and consequences of this new approach, as well as the way in which our changing understanding of the relationship between human beings and the biosphere may be transforming the practice of filmmaking.

Dátum:2017

Megjegyzések:The article interprets the award-winning Hungarian film Fehér tenyér/White Palms (Szabolcs Hajdu, 2006) in a wide social, cultural and historical context, from the point of view of such issues as sport, identity, nationality, masculinity, trauma and loss. The article explores the influence of local conceptions of history and nationhood on sports, and analyses the compensatory nature of sports in the discourses of nationality and masculinity in order to explain why and how the film diverges from the international genre patterns and in order to reveal the full cultural significance of the film's narrative and subtle bodily metaphors. Furthermore, it theorizes the symbolic, representative potentials of the athlete's body in terms of the king's two bodies theory, and calls attention to the ways this body fails to undergo the kind of idealization customary for the king's body in medieval law or the athlete's body in the victory narratives of mainstream cinema. Following Kaja Silverman's conceptualization of masculinity in crisis in Male Subjectivity at the Margins (1992), the article connects this failure of idealization to an ideological crisis characteristic of Hungary before as well as after the fall of communism.

Dátum:2020

Megjegyzések:The present paper explores the notions of masculinity, migration and the modern city as they appear in Refuge England (Robert Vas, 1959), a British docu-fictionfilm presented at thefirst Free Cinema Screening in 1959, directed by and starring post-1956 Hungarian political refugees. The semi-autographicalfilm, which narrates the first day in London of an Eastern European refugee, highlights the ways modernity, mobility and masculinity have been intertwined from the time of thefirst modern industrial societies. The paper argues that the Eastern European refugee's journeys through London, as he desperately tries tofind the address where he is promised refuge, can be interpreted as afigurative passage in which a succession of fantasies of the city appear in front of the eyes of the exhausted traveller. These fantasies reconfigure the matrix of the above-mentioned key concepts, as they mark the gradual emptying out of the protagonist's subjectivity to bare life. Thus, my analysis aims to place the formal and narrative analysis of thefilm within this wider socio-cultural context, indicating the ways Refuge England can be understood as an early example of migrant cinema, and a powerful commentary of industrialised modernity and its mobile subjects.

Cím:Fluid audio-spatial aesthetics and the communalization of popular music in the multi-clip movie Balaton method / Ureczky, Eszter; Győri, Zsolt
Dátum:2019
ISSN:2040-350X 2040-3518
Megjegyzések:Bálint Szimler and Rév Marcell's film Balaton Method (2016) includes 16 music videos ?featuring contemporary pop and underground-rock bands ? unified by the methodical use of the long take. With sound and image being recorded synchronously and uninterrupted in a single location, Balaton Method defies existing categories of music videos and its novelty is best captured by the label "live music video". While in feature cinema, the long take aesthetics may problematize the relation of time and narrative substance in a direct time-image (Deleuze 1989), adopt an analytical approach to space (Kovács 2008), and allow for the perception of the wondrous (Koepnick Citation2017), the ♭method' of Balaton Method involves the creation and management of cinematic space that serves both as a film set and a recording studio, but more importantly, one that is extremely fluid. We demonstrates how the employed digital technology highlights the fluidity of the mise-en-scéne and allows for increased spectatorial immersion in aural-visual space. In the second part of the article, we claim that, while the music videos in Balaton Method are non-narrative in the strict sense, they evoke Lake Balaton as a nostalgic and transgenerational narrative that foregrounds shared affective experiences and a communal sense of belonging.
